Firing Pin Blocks - any merit?

Is there evidence to suggest that a firing pin block is a good thing on a service or duty pistol? They apparently compromise the trigger pull (perhaps only slightly), but is there a good safety argument for having a FPB? Does it justify any compromise in the action?

Are you referring specifically to the 1911 design? Or about the use of a firing pin block as a drop safety in general?

It is a very good safety feature, as mentioned above, if hammer drops onto firing pin without trigger being pulled, pistol won't fire.
This isn't necessary or improvement to competition guns.
In 1911 case (series 80), it's actually very un-desirebale feature as it was not designed and executed well in 1911.

There might be a valid argument for competition if you want the absolute besterestest trigger you can get on your toy, but for a duty or carry piece, the benefits definitely outweigh any [possibly imperceivable] downside to the trigger pull.
