OK, it's not a "black" shotgun, it is an original Cooey Model 84. It has a full choke, but the muzzle seems to be exactly the same diameter as the shotshell: ~19mm

Is it safe to fire slugs from this, or nay?

It will be fine, however some brands of slugs seem to shoot differently in every barrel. Buy and test fire several different boxes and brands and go with the one that has the best groups. You might be amazed at the difference from one box to another.

Read the label on the box. Some slugs should not be fired through a full choke barrel.
The old soft lead Foster type slugs are quite safe to fire through a choked barrel.

I wondered about the full choke / slugs thing before til I recalled the ad for the Marlin Goose Gun stating w/ slugs "at 50 yds it was as powerful as many larger hunting rifles".
Factory literature praising the use of slugs through a full bore bbl; good enough for me.

rifle 2000fps X 150-200grain= 300k-400k
slug at 50yrd maybe 1000fps X 430grain= 430k
(this math isnt based on real units but still prove the differences between the two)

so yes, a slug got the same power or more as a rifle.

(sorry to bump an old thread, i just find this fact very interesting.)
