This is a very interesting little youtube video, testing the validity of the sharpes rifles episode where Sean Bean "Sharpe" trains his boys to shoot fast without ramming.

DISCLAIMER HERE-

If your new to flintlock military smoothbores please do NOT try this, with that said if you have experience and confidence......why not try it, I will be:)

I've seen that video before. IMHO, the "tap loading" procedure they were doing is unsafe for 2 reasons:

- spitting the ball down the barrel puts your face in front of the muzzle while there is powder down
- banging the butt on the ground risks an accidental discharge depending on how good your half #### is

When you're loading and firing a musket, the real key to speed is economy of motion, not shortcuts and fancy tricks. Watching the way the guy in the video moved when he was demonstrating loading made me wonder if the 2/95th Regiment (Australia) ever practices drill. His hands, feet, and body were all over the place and he never handled the musket the same way twice. Tons of wasted motion, which only slows you down. If you want to build speed, first practice the moves in the drill manual until you can do them without thinking about it. (Strangely enough, the people who wrote the manuals knew a thing or two.....) Then work on doing it the Same. Way. Every. Time. When you start to move like a machine your speed will pick up.

Amaziah,
I 100% know what your saying, I think the face in front of the bore is not all that smart;)

I wont fire any musket without a good lock up to the half ####, as I said if you are knowledgeable, careful and bold why not try it??

The butt tapping the earthen ground is no more dangerous then snapping the musket stoutly to the shoulder when loaded as long as your musket is in good order.
And why not have a frizzen stall on when its on halfcock aswell if there is concern.

-side note- a simple way to test the half #### on your musket

1.- BRING UNLOADED MUSKET TO HALF ####
2.- SUSPEND MUSKET BY THE TRIGGER WITH YOUR FINGER

If the lock then engages, your half #### needs some work:D

Its just a neat thing, we all know Sharpe is fictional....that doesnt take away from its excellence as a show.
