I have a 10-22 and love it. I have a savage too but it is a bolt action. Both great rifles. Not sure how good the savage semi is, but most of the rifles are good. I dont think you will be disappointed with any of them.

A CZ would be a quality investment. The Marlins are accurate, my Marlin 7000 shot one hole groups at 50m. If I was only to get one .22 I would get a quality bolt action like the CZ Varmint.

Look into .17 caliber. Costs more money to feed but more range, you may not get bored with it as quick.

Super cheap: Mossberg Plinkster

On sale for $140 right now. Hard to beat that price in a semi ;).

I have nothing good to say about the Savage 64 I bought from new- it went back for warranty repair work and still would not feed/group nicely.

I now own a Marlin 60 and its been flawless... No problems ever after a couple of thousand rounds, accurate/fun/points nicely and I'm 6'4".
Recommend if you want a detachable mag, look at a used Marlin 795 or 7000.

Enjoy, and welcome to the game!

Cooey, Mossberg, CIL, Winchester, Remington, Savage, Browning, etc. Each makes or made probably a dozen different models (Mossberg probably 300 it seems) in all types of actions. Any of your 3 choices would be fine, just realize that once you start learning about all the diff .22 rifles out there, your bank account will soon suffer. But you'll be smiling.

If it must be semi auto, my vote is for the Marlin 60. Stuff 14 rounds down the tube and blast away. I've always found these to be very accurate with the micro groove barrel and reliable. The late model guns hold the bolt open on the last shot.

I bought a used marlin 7000 from 1shot and it shoots amazingly well right out of the box.I have had several people try and buy it from me but it`s a keeper.
Last time I took my niece and nephew out they were 6+8 and went through 750 rounds in one day.I couldn`t get them to put it down.

I would say my Savage model 64 is total garbage. Cycle well but does not group, I think its inherent with their barrel atachment deisgn. Why do they make em can't understand. Savage MkII with accutrigger and HB is on the other hand exellent and accurate rifle. Inexpensive too. Mossberg semi auto I have (old discontinued model) is very accurate for thin barreled rifle but has some feeding problems. If Mossberg keeps the tradition then its probably a good buy, and cheap too. I'd say ( I always say this) buy them all and sell what you do not like. Or keep on buying used 22's, lots of them in off season, 50-100$. Somebody's loss will be your gain.

I'd suggest turfing the semi-only idea and get a decent bolt gun. Cheap practice, generally more accurate than a semi (a LOT) and more reliable/less finicky.

I'd also suggest raising your budget a bit. Think of it this way: How much are you willing to spend on your centerfire, and how many rounds do you put through it in a year? Now how much trigger time are you going to have with your rimfire, and how many rounds? It seems to make sense (to me) to spend the dough on a good rimfire - after all, you'll be shooting it a lot more than your more expensive hunting rifles.

the suggestion for a CZ is a good one, but I'd say the Ruger 77/22 is a nicer gun overall, and the Browning t-bolt is simply heaven

I'm so disappointed when I see one of these "1st timeer" thread where they want to start w/a autoloader.
Don't get me wrong, I not against automatics and you can certainly shoot accurately w/one. But I do think that very often the ability for quick follow up shots gets into our subconscious and over-rides the desire for 1st shot/every shot accuracy.
And isn't that what shooting and marksmanship is all about. Hitting your target w/EVERY shot? (or as close to every shot as possible).
That's why prefer bolt actions and especially single shot rifles. Many a deadly marksman has been born on a single shot because he knew his one shot HAD to count. And any accurate shot is much more satisfying than 10 quick fired misses.
Want to enjoy shooting? Slow down and become a marksman instead of a lead scatterer. Just my opinion.

I say ruger 10/22 because you WILL want to mod your rifle and there's no better .22 for aftermarket accessories than the ruger
