First 22! Ruger 10/22

Hi CGN!

No major gripes, no functional issues, just an enthusiastic little celebration. Got my first 10/22, which is also my first .22, ever! Mossy Oak model. Not super impressed with the fit of the stock on the reciever there is bit of a gap at the back, but over all it was super fun to take out and shoot! I have a permission on 200 acres where the land owner has a taste for those nut lovin tree dwellers. I thinks I'll be sending him a lil sumthin to thank him for the use of his land once I have this sited in :D

It shot a little low and the to the left from factory, but otherwise the gun cycled fine and i had 0 feed or ejection issues. A quick site adjustment will have it hammering small game in no time flat! I only put 4 full mag's through it, but damn it got dirty fast. Used a bulk pack of remington.

Overall, the stock don't really impress me. The mossy oak isn't what i would prefer but in the end it's a 10/22, my first .22 and functioned (the important part) flawlessly. A little stiff, but flawlessly. The bolt release seems to get stuck up a bit if i lock it open, but otherwise it looks like i will be shooting it as much and as often as i can :)

That's a fun gun, specially if you like tinkering. There's a lot you can do to it.
You picked the worst ammo to start IMO. I'm guessing nothing else was in stock.
 
Good choice! Only about 100 years of life left out of it. Upgrade parts as you wish. Some people do not like the 10/22 much, as out of the box it's not that accurate, but that's what bolt guns are for, this gun is just plain fun.
 
I confess - ammo choices are just what I saw, I have not looked at different brands and the value/quality they offer. Doing some reading I'm finding the remington .22lr bulk packs aren't favored. But to break the lil gun in they will do! If it can cycle a brick of them, the good stuff will just be all the better. I chose this gun because of all the mods available for it. I do like to tinker from time to time as funds and time permit! But mostly I wanted an out of the box 22 that I could have fun shooting and do some small game hunting with at the same time. I enjoy a nice rabbit here and there (though I hunt those with a shot gun) and this one particular land owner (with TONS, I mean FLOCKS!!) of deer on his land, has a taste for squirrels. So if I can put some in the game bag for him it will make everyone happy and make fall permissions for a blind and filling my tag all the much easier!
 
I'm happy for you guys! If you like cleaning your gun lots and don't care about group sizes, remington ammo works. The m-22 ammo is 52.99 here, was 49.99. I find it cycles better with way less ftf/fte. Dynapoint groups better but is abit more costly. Amerocan eagle 38g and 40g are great also, if you can find it!

I'm pretty sure that stock gap is factory "on purpose" to keep the plastic from eventually coming apart after a bunch of clacking from the bolt.
Buy a bolt buffer! If it's the only mod you do it is well worth it. The auto bolt release is worth while too if you care to bother with it.

Bolt buffer I understand. Is the auto bolt release mod designed to shut the bolt up when you stick a mag in?
 
Unless the bolt is locked back the bolt is always shut when you stick a mag in. The auto release is so when the bolt is locked back all you have to to is pull the charging handle and not flip that little lever
 
I bought a 10/22 with the mannlicher-style stock and have been very happy with it. Hates Remington ammo, loves my Federal stuff though. Happy blasting indeed!

If your only gonna have one 22 you made the best choice possible. I have one I bought used in the 70s and have put many thousands of rounds through. The only time it started to fail (FTF) I replaced the mag and it hasn't missed since.
 
Thanks for enjoying my little celebration with me! Lot's to learn in terms of ammunition choices etc. The friendly chap at the store suggested CCI ammo but at that point, with the bill adding up already I just wanted a bulk pack to get it out and see how it felt. It's VERY light. The buffer and auto release are excellent suggestions, so thanks! inexpensive and beneficial. I was not liking that little lever by the trigger gaurd one bit!

I am also reading, for proper long term care, to get a dry lube. I have rem oil but I'm assuming that is more for protection. Do you many owners use dry lube to keep your 10/22 running tip top?

If your just going to plink anything that cycles well will do if accuracy is the goal the the CCI standard should do well but it is a semi non the less. Federal AM22 does well for both in ours.
 
I plan to make the 10/22 my first purchase as well. I am hoping for a target model with the bull barrel. From what I can figure, that one seems to be the most accurate of the 10/22's. Will mount a scope, and hope to shoot at 100 yds once I figure it out. Glad to hear you like it, are you planning any upgrades?

I believe I will try my hand at the auto bolt release, eventually. I also think the buffer is a great idea, especially if you plan on shooting it LOTS. I will eventually put a scope on it but I would really like to see how well I can adjust to the open irons on it for the first while. I've shot a couple of guns in the past where I just couldn't get to know them, and a few where I felt like I really couldn't miss. I hope this becomes one of those! I want to site it in and shoot a few hundred rounds through it sometime soon :)
