first 7.62 semi auto

Was out last week with my .308 Ruger and a few SKS's.

The .308, yes is superior to the 7.62x39 but the recoil and noise is too much I think for plinking. The 7.62x39 is excellent for medium range shooting which most gunnutz do. Have you ever shot past 300 m? Then consider the cost of ammo, I only bought the 308 cause I somehow ended up with a lot of free and/or cheap ammo, but otherwise I just stick to the SKS - plus all related firearms.

Don't even talk about the 30-06, that's a magnum 308 - not for me, I don't hunt elephants or brown bears. Pass.

Yes, if you may, buy an SKS and a type 81 - don't look back.

Sad they banned the Norc or Dominion or whatever name M14, that was am amazing rifle, fairly soft recoil for a 308 - plus the CZ/VZ - shame. The VZ 58 probably was the best rifle in the market - ever. Excellent quality, multiple options in barrel length, many upgrade options, I don't know where to stop, shame shame.

Ironically, VZ58s are to be appropriated by law enforcement upon confiscation.

there is always the beauty in the eye of the beholder but praticality is another: one way to find it try all of them and see which one you like. i know that the folded works for shooting and less room in the same.

Agree. My Tikka folds and that is huge as I can put it in a smaller range bag, but in my safe, I can't fold it as then the rifles in front of it won't allow the door to close (I do need a new safe but that's another story).

Yes, beauty is in the eye of the beholder for sure. The kids and I oftentimes when driving would look at some interesting coloured cars and wonder what prompted the buyer to select that colour. Same with clothing...

2 K budget?
A good hand picked sks .... whatever manufacturer..... you pick. I like to buy firearms in person whenever possible but most retailers have them.
So for 2K, a nice SKS , perhaps an optic rail like the magwedge, perhaps a red dot optic and enough left over for at least a crate of ammo.

Every canadian gun owner worth his salt should have at least 1 SKS and a few crates of surplus x39 in the stash.
