first 9mm

Ok I'm looking at buying my first pistol (I've shot them but never bought one of my own) the only thing i can really say is id like to keep it at around $800 or less and i can't use Glocks.

Im entering into a policing program at my local college. so my other question besides what pistol is what calibre should i start with should i start with 9mm or go straight to .40?:confused:
 
Go to your local gun store, handle as many as you can to find what fits you best. Dry fire a few if they will let you to get to know the trigger.

Even better if you can go to a local range that rents out the guns and take a few for a test drive.

I ended up with a 941 polymer in 9mm for my first, very happy with it. Range kits are in the same price range as the m&p range kit but don't include the speed loader so factor in an extra $35 or so.

I think you like 45s but any how I was curious sooo I looked up federal self defence loads to see the difference and really there is not that much at 25 yards these are the energy levels.:stirthepot2:

45's do let in more light cuz they leave bigger holes..... and there's a thread somewhere here that says the more that gets in, the more devastating the shot!
 
Seriously check out a SAM 1911. I have a 9mm military enhanced that I bought from Wolverine that I have a couple thousand rounds through and it has been rock solid.
But seeing as you are going into law enforcement isn't a Glock something you will be using?

22lr is never a bad start and you can have a good one 500 or so, but a CZ SP01, Walther P99 or Sig p226 would be good. may need to go lightly used to keep under $800 unless you find a good sale. try and handle them first if you can.
