Saw this fella first at 150yds along the hydro lines, he put on the brakes for a doe bleat but only gave me a frontal shot (I was not comfortable with that shot because of my position so I waited). He ended up walking off so I used a grunt and 20 minutes later I hear some crackling off to my left at 30 yards, my guess was he was trying to wind me. Out of the bushes he steps at 30ish yards downhill so I sent a 180gr power point to him just behind the right shoulder. One big leap and down he went not 3 feet from where I shot. Vitals were gone on examination. I couldn't have been happier. He may not be the largest out there but for a first deer I am more than happy.

Lessons learned:
Quad would have been nice when solo dragging this guy 1.5k back to the truck over all sorts of hilly terrain (shot at 9, truck at 12:40).
Grunt call is king.
The .303 still gets the job done right.

S***, thats one hell of a drag. Congrats on your first deer, you sure worked for it.

Another note-worthy trick is drag them from the front , not the rear...just works better.
Congrats on the deer and go on you for using the Lee Enfield.

Thanks everyone. Toymaker...Yup, I'm happy with it, restored it to military and for hunting season I put the no drill mount on it. Gets the job done :). Despite the hard work getting it out of the bush, I felt that it made the experience that much better.

What do you mean by this? Are deer smart enough to play with the wind?

I've been told that some deer will try and work their way downwind of what is calling them before they approach. To smell what is making the noise and decide if it is safe or not.
