First AR 15 grouping - 100 yards

A bit strongly worded, but Beltfed is right on technical points, this has nothing to do with grain weight.

my particular AR likes the 62 gr remington, can get 2" groups with this, the same Remington Ammo in 55 gr., opens up to 3" at 100 yards. Is this me? I tend not to think so.
Could well be the batch of ammo.

Onagoth, one thing to consider if you want more precision with irons, might be to swap out the 2MOA front sight, or file it thinner.

So.......... basically you are saying that any gun should shoot just as well with any ammo.........everything that I have learned over the years tells me differently!

No, I didn't say that at all.

I just said that your batch of Remington 55gn ammo might be more to blame for larger groups than the grain weight of the bullets. Or to be clearer, you might find different results with different brands/batches of 55gn ammo with your rifle.

I am saying that a 9" twist can shoot 55gn ammo accurately, if it is accurate ammo and everything else is good to go.

You bring up some valid points.

I have been shooting Rem. ammo fairly consistently, both 62 an 55 gr. stuff over the last year or so.......but, I have also experimented with other brands as well, when the Rem stuff was unavailable. I have found that for any given "brand" the heavier stuff "seems" to group better than the lighter stuff. The only thing that I have found in a 55 gn bullet that seems to print decently, is PMC.........but I tend to get a lot of misfires from it.

Like I said, these are only my experiences, with my AR. It does group better with 62 gr ammo rather than the 55 gr stuff. I wish it weren't true, 55 gr. stuff is easier to come by, and is cheaper, but alas, it is not so!

Simple tips

Give your eyes a break: get a good 6'' black bullseye, use a 6 o'clock hold so the bull just sits flush on top of your front post AND focus on the front post, not on the target.
Like I say when people ask how I can group at 100 yards '' just aim at the same place'' It may sound like a joke but you should strive for consistency in your sighting.
Also, your aiming time shouldn't exceed 12 to 15 seconds before the shot breaks. I you go past that point, your viewing acuity will decrease fast. If this happens, do not shoot: instead close your eyes, relax a few seconds then do it again. Your AR will do the rest.
Little things like consistency in your shooting stance, breathing control, grip and trigger squeeze can do a lot too to shrink your groups.
Good shooting.
PP. :)

So, I got out again tonight, shot another 10 shot group after some adjustments. I think this is pretty close to where I want it sighted in.

I had at least one definite flyer, but I think there is some slight signs of improvement. The difficult part is seeing the target beyond the front sight, as the front sight takes up nearly the entire target at 100 yards (at least width wise)

I'll keep practicing, so far, I really love shooting this gun. :)

Have you guys got any tips for shooting through iron sights? Ideally, I'd like to get down to a 1 or 2" group....if possible.
