First AR-15 Suggestions

Why not have some fun and build your own? Research the specific parts you truly want to use, or like, and assemble it yourself. It's more fun than just buying an off the shelf rifle. That is my own $0.02.

If you happen to be LE/mil I'd say IRG with their promotion on Colt AR's...but if not then:

I'd suggest a Palmetto State Armory AR through IRG found here: http://www.irunguns.ca/store/rifles-for-sale-canada?product_id=413 (but seems to be on preorder) or a Spikes Tactical found here: https://shopquestar.com/shopping65/shopexd.asp?id=1794&bc=no (not sure if you're looking for a shorter barrel but others are available). Otherwise I'd say some good deals to be found on the EE in your price range.

the Ruger is pretty nice. but for the money I would get a norc or ATI Omni and then just up grade it with top of the line parts.

You're joking right? You can buy an American made Ruger SR556E piston system for under $1K. with quality components like a CHF barrel, chrome BCG etc right out of the box.
