I've been looking at building an AR for quite some time. I have just purchased a stripped lower, a parts kit from Dlask, as well as the grip and mags.

I came across Daniel Defence's 10.3" upper for about $1100 (sold out) and became interested in making an SBR. Is this a reasonable price and a reliable upper? Would it be any cheaper to build piece by piece without sacrificing reliability?

I don't have a huge budget to drop on this toy, I just want a new 5.56 to play with that wont jam up every time I take it out. Any and all suggestions welcome!

If you want to build the exact same upper with all DD part and the same rail it will be more expensive.
You can build a short barrel upper for less, take a look at Saskatoon Gun Work for some Aero Precision parts. The MK18 rail is 350$+ by itself so if you don't mind another rail system that's where you can save some money.

It doesn't need to be the exact same, I just like the look of an SBR with a full length hand guard. Thanks for the tip, I hadn't checked out Saskatoon Gun Works yet. From what I can see, complete uppers seem to be the cheaper way to go. I see NEA has a wide selection, but I recall reading bad reviews on their products. Is there anyone else in Canada offering complete SBR uppers?

Questar have some but they are more expensive. CRAFM have PWS or check EE.
I build a upper for a friend for under 800$ a few months back using mostly Aero Precision new parts.

You could piece together an upper for around $1000 if you wanted to go that route.
Unless you are really determined to go with a quadrail forend I would suggest you look at a freefloat forend with smooth sides and bottom that you can add short rail sections to if you find something you need to hang off of it. I find the smooth forends much more comfortable and also lighter. I really can't figure out what someone needs all that rail space for, I like my AR's light and simple not bulky and weighed down by junk that serves no purpose other than trying to look tacticool.

This is my last build.
NEA upper was around $100 off the EE
FailZero Nickel Boron bcg was around $200 new
Troy Alpha 12 inch forend was around $200 off the EE
Magpul RVG was around $30
Custom stainless 300 Blackout barrel was around $400 if my memory is working correctly today (made by CGN member Suputin).

Barrels can be bought from around $200 and up though depending what you want.

Haven't had a single failure since I put it together.

Wow, thanks Movado! Are all of these parts capable of running 5.56 or am I limited to .223? Also, I plan on using my buffer tube from my VZ, but it doesn't have the buffer assembly. Sorry for the noob question, but is it necessary or just used for reducing recoil?
