A few weeks back, I got an upper and lower unfinished "in the white" from SFRC (Great experience as it is always with them!). The upper was sand blasted, the lower was not. I blasted the lower, and painted and baked on Wheeler FDE Cerama-Coat from 4GT, I got a lower parts kit and Armorers wrench from Select in Cambridge, and a Carbine length stock/buffer assembly and bench block from Bulls Eye. It was easier than it looked in videos and books, and would not have needed the bench block for anything up to this point. Tight, accurate fit, but easy alignment. Every manufacturer got everything right!

This is really something that anyone with the desire should be able to tackle.

The upper will maybe be more of a challenge; time will tell. I am liking what I am seeing so far!!:

I hadn't realized NEA/BCL started making quasi ambi lowers...

What are your plans for the build?

Not entirely sure; researching as I go.

Quick question; since I have a "carbine buffer and stock" must I use a carbine or mid-length barrel?

Very nice work so far! I am still waiting for my receiver set to come in (I was in the unfortunate group that the transfer from bcl to SFRC is all sorts of buggered but still waiting patiently). I am planning a super small, almost ar pistol short, build. I already have the NEA 7.5” barrel in 7.62x39, the NEA CCS stock, 9” hand guard and gas block/tube. Just waiting to try and find a good deal on a LPK and UPK and buy an S&J hardware lineir comp to complete it all. Will be my first build as well so very excited to give it a go!

I picked up two of these also. I plan to do an expensive build and a cheap build. I started on the cheap build first just to see how cheap I can build an AR for. I am waiting for more parts to come in but I am at about the same point that you are at, Meroh. I will try to get off my lazy butt and take some pics.

My son wanted me to do something a bit different so I kept the aluminium in the raw by first neutralizing it and then applying a product called Protectaclear so that it will not pit. I could have polished it but chose not too. Polishing it would look amazing but in the raw is now bad look at all. It really has the same effect as my two tone SIG, with the brushed stainless slide.

Meroh, What type and length of barrel are you going with? BTW, you should grab a NEA charging handle from SFRC. I think they have it at $14.95 or something while everyone else is selling them for $35 and up. They might have a few more bells and whistles but you really can beat a no frills sub $15 charging handle.

No use whatever barrel you want. The barrel will state what length gas tube it needs. The stock and barrel are unrelated.

I was not sure if a different weight buffer might be required if one went to a longer barrel; Thanks!

which lpk did you buy. i like that safety lever

This one: https://selectshootingsupplies.com/products/radical-firearms-ar-15-lower-parts-kit-ambi

Nice tight fit with everything perfectly aligned, and the trigger is way better than I hoped. Good value!

One minor issue with the safety, or rather, the lower; there is an emboss on the left side of the lower below the higher safety stop embosses; the safety binds on it, enough to take a small portion of finish off and see bare aluminum. I will let it wear in for a year, then may touch it up with the CeramaCoat. I like the ambi bolt release that came with the lower; pretty cool also!
