Hello everyone I'm relatively new to CGN and have had nothing but positive experiences from the site. I just purchased my first ar a norinco cq-a. I'm looking for some help and advice to add some mods to the gun. The first thing I wanna do is remove that ugly handguard and get some sort of quad rail. It's got the 10.5 inch barrel so just fishing around to see what everyone recomeds, and what size. I'm kinda on a budget and don't wanna spend over $250.

Priorities! - start with the needed, then move down the list. First up, you need mags and ammo (a metric buttload of ammo) and enough mags to make a nice scale model of the Great Wall (it's a Norc after all). Next up, a sling - get a Vickers, 'nuff said. Then look at optics, lots of good relatively inexpensive choices (Sparc, TRS25, Burris etc.) Finally, believe it or not, a whole bunch of pretty high speed guys run a vertical foregrip on a length of rail attached under the handguard, with no rail at all. If however you're hooked on a rail, the Midwest Industries Carbine length free float 2 piece that Wolverine sells is a terrific unit for about $215, no need to pull the gun apart, no removing the FSB, just cut the Delta Ring assembly off and assemble the rail onto the gun. You end up with a solid, free float rail with a continuous top rail. I had one mounted on a 14.5 Norc and it was very solid and fit with no drama, the rail length for that is 7 inches (for either 14.5 or 10.5), and you need one for a carbine length gas system.

I have the same rifle, bought it back in october. I bought a fab defense quad rail for it, but I had to do a lot of... 'amateur gunsmithing' to make it fit... From what I hear, the handguard retention caps are slightly smaller than spec for other types of AR's, so expect to do a lot of filing and grinding. But once I got it fitted, and added a few other accessories, its a very handsome rifle

Now if only I was actually living within 1000km of the stupid thing, as I havent even put a single round through it

Wow. I might not be as low speed high drag as I thought :). I currently have a FAB polymer rail on the underside of my 10.5" Norc's handguard, with a FAB T-Grip VFG/light mount (http://www.fab-defense.com/en/category-foregrips/id-25/integrated-foregrip-light-holder.html) and a Surefire G2. No other mods to date.

It seems comfortable, and the light works OK. Still haven't decided what else to do with it. I was toying with the idea of tritium sights, and might give a red dot a try at some point, but so far, I'm not really getting the urge to dress this one up; not seeing much that needs to change.

I just got the same rifle a couple weeks ago, heres my current list of things to do or have done so far,

I added an aluminum quad rail, looks awesome, was a 2 piece rails and went on with no trouble at all

I am planning to add a carry handle scope mount
I have a 1.5 to 5 Simmons scope collecting dust here, it is going on the carry handle scope mount so I can use either the scope or the iron sights.

I have 2 of the LAR-15 mags with a coupler, I love that they hold 10 rounds, but one of them does not eject from the magwell unless I pull it out, the other "sort of" shoots out when released, but the factory mags shoot out as they are supposed to.

I also got a 1600 round case of Norinco ammo and put almost 200 rounds though the rifle on my first outing with no issues what so ever. Very pleased with it so far...

get a carbine rail on ebay
magpul grip
spikes buffer
a gas block rail
flip sights
maybe magpul stock
virtical grip and your set.

First, get out your angle grinder.......

Best thing to do is get your hands on a decent amount of mags and lots of ammo. Take it out a few times and shoot the sh*t out of it, then you might have a better idea of what you'll want to have on it. Keep in mind lots of things make a gun look really cool, but so many of those things are completely useless for the average shooter. From what I've read about the Norinco AR's, they aren't the prettiest but can last a long time if you take care of them. This means you have a long time to figure out your needs/wants, and possibly try out other shooters gear.

I pretty much did what you want to do. I bought the vortex red dot, used quad rail, 5.11 sling, magpul stock, and foregrip. Even though, all of that only cost me about 200 bucks (red dot was a gift), I still wish I would have spent more on ammo. At the end of the day, your firearm is a tool, not a piece of art.
