First AR now what?

Greetings

I ordered my first black rifle last week (Savage MSR-15 recon)

Just wondering what I should be looking at tool/cleaning wise to keep it clean?

I've been looking at a OTIS .223/5.55 cleaning kit.

Just looking for some advice for what should be on my radar next?

My suggestions and what I use in brackets:
-bore guide (Lucas)
-one piece rod and jag (bore tech)
-patches (brownells)
-cotton swabs (cheapest ones from brownells)
-solvent (boretech eliminator)
-some kind of scraper is nice for getting tough carbon off,
 
Now u shoot the crap out of it, know it can be better and spend a butload of money forever upgrading it and using your spare parts to build more ARs.

Thats what is happening to me anyways.
 
Otis kit is good to go
CLP for cleaning/lubbing/protecting
Patches, anywhere you can find them


Buy magazines, just like beer, buy it in six pack. Then you need to fill those up, look up tenda for deals.

Don't mod it until you fired it a bit, that will save you money on the long run.

Thanks :) I have 5 LAR-15 mags on order and I have a 1000 rounds of .223 here already.. :)
 
I like me a boresnake, little plastic toothbrush, some rags, and CLP for a cleaning kit. Dental picks and scrapers will likely not be necessary. Once in a while, some pipe cleaners and q-tips to run through all the little spots on the BCG. I try to minimize any wire brush use on my rifles

This is personally what i recommend as well. Some people try and clean an AR in the same fashion that they clean a precision bench rifle. Its not needed and is just a waste of time. Whenever im done a range session, I pull the BCG, wipe it down and use a nylon brush to scrub it a little. Then re oil. I wipe the upper receiver down and re oil. Then I run a bore snake a couple times and done. Take all of 5 minutes.

Thanks for the tips. I do have a .223 bore snake already :)
 
I only use carbon fibre cleaning rods, Tipton brand FYI, no snakes for me. Jags, brushes, picks(nylon) and patches round out the cleaning gear. Weapon Shield solvent, grease and oil do the lubing.
