First AR recomendations

S&W MP AR 15 Sport - $899 from Wanstalls plus $10 S&H. Everything you NEED in a flat top AR - no dust cover or FA. Like big deal ....

Put the money you save into ammo and a good red dot optic for a co-witness sight combo, or a CMMG .22 LR conversion. Get to know the rifle before going nuts dressing it up with after market goodies and running with the big dogs.

Looks good if you want out of the box. However the first thing I would want is install a free floating longer tube. That means a low profile gas block and a new front sight arrangement if you want one at all. With good optics, the irons become pretty useless to many people. The gas block sight rail on the Stag 3 was OK but I wanted a longer handguard so that went too. You can play with these rifles forever which is one of the reasons the AR is so much fun to own and shoot.

I don't disagree with anything you say...I'm just pointing out a value option for someone just starting out. I've bought exactly two "out of the box" AR's in my life (the first one...a Bushmaster XM15-E2S...long gone now and a Norc CQ-a for the kids to beat on...also long gone). Like you I realized pretty quick that I wanted to make changes. I've built (or rather, put together) every other AR I've owned. Did I save money? On some, yes...most nope. But they are exactly how I want them (well...mostly). I still want an HK MR223A1 but with a factory 10.4 barrel...so that's on hold until they release one. These things are definitely LEGO for big boys.

Yep. There are many "out of the box" AR's available if that's what you want. I agree with Mr. Sharps on buying a good optic. Even with those, I suggest that people look into the future a bit. My first was an Eotech that didn't work out well for me for precision shots at distance because I have astigmatism and that messes up the reticle a bit for me. Then I went with a very good 1X scope that cleared up the reticle problem but finally I wanted magnification and ended up with my current rig. Speaking for myself only, out of the box doesn't work well for my personality. I have a high-end pistol on the way and I'm already thinking of how to change it and just a little disappointed that it will be so good "out of the box". I guess one of my points is that if you are likely to upgrade piece by piece, start with a good base particularly if you are thinking of selling down the road. You can put a ton of high end after market parts on an entry-level brand but to a buyer it still is what it is. YMMV

This one right here...best bang for the buck...found here: http://www.irunguns.ca/store/rifles-for-sale-canada?product_id=413
That would be my choice too.
I have a few ARFs....railed, with grips and folding sights, optics, all the tacticool crap, and recently picked up an M4 plain jane with standard delta ring and handguards. I couldn't believe how light it was and pointable, well balanced....like an ARF should be lol.
I shoot fine with irons....and I think I'll be tossing all my free float rails and grips n ####. We add so much stupid weight to these things for no reason.

I'd like to see IRG put together PSA CHF uppers to the lowers (as I've said on a couple of occasions)...those things are fabulous. My son has the PSA CHF 14.7 M4A1 with just iron sights...light, balanced, shoots like a laser. In my opinion the CHF (not PTAC...avoid) are just as nice as BCM or DD (and much less money). PSA has a youtube video somewhere that shows them beating on a rifle pretty good (burying it, running it over, etc.) and it still working. I'm a fanboy...I'll admit.

I've shot and played around with lots of ARs from Norcs to Knights.

At around $1000 start of with a good platform and upgrade as necessary. At your current price range Just the SIG! The base one too. Don't get the Magpul MOE crap get the basic rifle and add a proper free float handgaurd and you are set! They really put some thought into this rifle.

If you can add another $500 go with a DD less things to upgrade.

I subscribe to pay once cry once. Bump another 300-500 $ to that and get a tank like a BCM, Colt or DD.

The old reliable:

Colt - http://www.irunguns.ca/store/rifles-for-sale-canada?product_id=115 @ 1400 USD

I'd seriously check this Bravo Company carbine :

I almost bought this one before I decided on the KAC SR-15 MOD1 E3

This DD is a lot of gun for the price.

Stay the F--K away from Norinco!!! Save your money and buy a Daniel Defense M4A1. Used by many SOCOM units. The thing is damn ###y and shoots amazingly accurate. Google "Block 2 m4a1" and see if you like it. I have one. I built it but now you can buy it. :p

Jumped on an old thread to bash norc and pimp something 3x the price?

He wants his first AR, not his last one.
