first AR15 NEA15 / Armalite / savage / springfield armory ???

If I had a budget of 1200 or so, I would definitely be throwing Stag Arms on to the list, worth a look, they make some really nice offerings for sure and get great reviews

Get any lower you want and wait for an upper on the EE. People get turned off by round count but youre not going to shoot out a high quality barrel...if you do 300 dollar fix. I got a complete DD upper for 630 dollars complete stag lower for 200. Plenty of room for mags ammo and optic for under 1500.

Armalite builds a nice all around rifle. I have the m15 competition and its excellent. Fit and finish is quite good. Aero Percision is also quite good. In the same price range Diamondback makes a decent rifle as well. I will second the statement in regards to avoiding NEA unless you find a screaming deal.

Have you considered getting a used rifle? You could get a very nice rifle for under $2K with some extra goodies too. I see a few LMT's and even a few KAC's for $2K. Also a few DD's available on the EE too under $2K.

My brother has a "starter" Armalite and I have a competition model. Great Guns. My first AR was a Wyndham, still have it and it is a great value!

Agreed. I have the 13.5" Competition and it has been excellent so far. I got a m15 lower with a DD upper for a good price and sold the upper. I got the Competition upper in July and have put about 2500rds through it and it has been great. I did upgrade a few things like the BCG and Buffer (JP LMOS and Geissele Super 42 H1) and that made it have almost zero recoil.

I would think the OP would do well getting an Armalite. Wolverine has a sale on a few in stock. The M15 Light Tactical with 14" barrel and 10" aluminum handguard. It is nice and light too @ 6lbs. If that is a little to much cash ($1250ish) you could go with the M15 Defensive which is basically standard M4 style for about $900
