Now THAT'S interesting - a pic of brass colour change after having been heated to a specific temperature.
I would be careful that the brass started out clean and shiny, and it would be interesting to note if different methods of heating contributed to the colour, i.e. do propane or butane gasses do something that a salt bath or other method does not (and vice-versa). We assume that the copper-zinc mix is the same across brands, and that might be a factor as well.
This is all moot if you extablished colours, and then stuck with the same brass and heating method.
I use your method except for the indication technique.
Here is what works for me, after I tried the dark room method.
I set the torch on a medium to low idle , in a well lit room I watch the moisture leave as it moves down the case and then watch the heat effected metal, once it touches the end of the shoulder I give it the dump into water.
