First attempt making a tactical bolt knob for my Remington 700

This was my first attempt at modifying my original bolt to make a tactical one. Main reason I wanted to try that was because my thumb doesn't fit between the scope and the bolt knob when it was fully open.

Two short clips showing the machining operation. I saw a few on youtube and they had the jig to do it on the lathe or using it on a mill. I thought of making a jig out of a block of aluminum I had in stock and try it on my mill.
If i wasn't removing too much material per pass I was pretty confident that it would work alright.

Thank you guys. I just thought about something. If anybody would like to try it out. That project or another small project like that. I would be willing to "lend" you my machines and tools. I'm east of Ottawa but anybody close who would be interested can contact me. :)
 
Material cost is negligible. I generally make replacement knobs out of scrap barrels. i.e. free.
I use a commercial jig to hold the bolt in the lathe, for machining off the knob, and threading the shank. Downside to this system is that the jig only works with backswept Remington 700 bolts. Using a mill to machine away the knob allows most any bolt to be altered.
 
Tks guys, appreciated. Like Tiriaq said the cost was nothing. I had a 1" aluminium shaft lying around. Same thing for the jig, had the block of aluminium from something else I worked on. I actually made two half but realized that only one would work fine if I removed only a little material per pass. It was rigid enough as I was removing 20 thousands per pass. I didn't want to buy a jig since it was only a 1 of. It maybe took 30 minutes to do the jig. Another 30 to make the job.
