I've always liked the look of stag pistol grips, so I thought I'd try making some.
All the sheds i have are old and bleached white so I looked around on kijiji and found a lady selling brown sheds for dog chews. I choose a few pieces that might work.
I used a hacksaw and cut a piece right down the middle. Then i traced out the outline of a black rubber grip from a project 1911 Im working on.

They were over a 1/2 inch thick at this point so I used a belt sander, locked on, lying on its side to remove a lot of material. When it was lying flat and thinner I marked the screw holes and drilled them with a 15/64 drillbit.
I was out on one hole by a millimetre or so and used a dremel to remove enough material until they fit.
They were quite fat at this point and felt good in my largish hands but the grip screw were to short.

I had to sand down more material to thin them down enough so the screws would fit.
I used a 9/32 drill bit and carefully removed about 1 mm of antler on both side of the grip screw holes to allow for the bushings and sink the screwheads a little. I had a thin spot in the middle of the lefthand panel so i had to take material off the face instead of the back. Too bad as i like the look of the brown "bark" quite a bit.
I finished them up and kept checking the fit. Unfortunately i removed a few mm of material in one area. Doesnt affect the fit or function but i cant help but see it.
Not sure how or if i should seal and or finish them but they are ready now.

I am going to make a few more sets over the winter and i will make a jig for drilling the holes. And advice/suggestions would be appreciated.
Oh and I lost my wedding ring some where in the house so I made one out of a scrap piece of antler. My wife didnt like me going around without one. Cause that ring was the only thing stopping the babes from coming on to me...
