Hi guys

My significant other just got her first Big Bull moose draw for 7:10 B.C. this year ...I got her a Tikka t3 6.5x55 last fall that she really likes to shoot ......I have been playing around with reloads for target shooting ...

130 g vld. , hornady sst. I always like Nosler partitions I have always had good luck with them . and just looking for some load suggestions for moose ....I know the 6.5 is more than capable for this job ....

so just some preferences ,,no calibre changes she wont shoot anything bigger .....
 
Why not try the 140gn SST loaded, I load for the same rifle and getting 2750fps and shoots 3/4"moa out of a tikka with no preasure signs, using h4381sc. More than enough for moose and it's all about shot placement.
 
I have two Tikkas but they are chambered in .260 Rem, my 6.55 x 55 is an army surplus but would love a Tikka in left hand 6.5x55. If Nosler Partitions are working well for her you could use those or Accubonds. My dad dropped his first Bull Moose with a Partition from a .308 at 227 yards. Let us know what you decide! : )
 
I would be using something in the 160 grain range...Preferably a partition,....but a hornady will suffice. Both will have a great sectional density..Moose aren't super hard to drop with shot placement being good...
 
7-10 seems like quite a populated, confined area, for a big moose.
What bullet to use would be on the bottom of my list and where to find him would be on top of the list.
When does your season open, rutting time, still feeding on lily pad roots, etc?
Vegetation, like the deciduous trees and shrubs they feed on change so with the years and it has been a lot of years since I was there, but at one time it contained really good wintering grounds for moose.
At one time I flew on official BC government game surveys and one winter day from about the head of Mud River, following it south, we counted 66 moose by the time we got to the highway.
 
Load the 140 Partition in that 6.5X55 and go shoot a moose. Should be able to find a 2750-2800 fps load easily.

I have shot several moose with the Swede [Remington 700 Classic], and all have been with the 140P All died very quickly.

I would be reluctant to recommend the SST for moose unless I was sure of a Broadside presentation. [Not always practical to expect that]

^^^^This. As always right on the mark. While the 6.5 swed is adequate for Moose, it is not ideal. Most shots are going to be close in P.G., but a premium projectile like a partition is needed, and handloads to take advantage of the modern firearm. Factory is not far from 30-30 performance, handloads are the only way to go with the swede.
 
hi guys ... shot placement is always what counts most ( She is a dammed good shot ) I have been hunting the PG area for the last 40 years and shots have ranged from 20 yards to last years 2 point at 250 yards ...I have always used my 30-06 7600 with 180 gr partitions ..never had any issues .....as for 7-10 being populated ...no more than any other MU that touches PG after west lake there are very few to no homes out there and lots of moose ..just a matter of looking for them .. ...that said I purchased 1 Tikka for the Mrs.ss and one for the daughter ,,, both recoil shy( don't like the -06 ) , and both shot everything else I own ,,,I had shot the 6.5x55 years ago and thought this was the route to go ...they both have taken deer with them ... but bullet selection on deer has never been much of an issue ......I just want this moose hunt to go off with out any should have, could have , bullet selection issues...and oh yes H4831 you have to remember that big bull draw is 2 points and above we wont be looking for a trophy just looking to put meat in the freezer

I really liked the 140grain x bullet , but they no longer make it .
it was similar in length to the original 160 grain bullet the 6.5x55 was designed for , and it seated out to the rifling very nicely .

the 130 grain tsx would be the next best option , and I wouldn't hesitate to use the 120 grain .

the draw back with the 120 grain bullet is I could never get it even close to the rifling of my rifles , maybe in a 260 , or a swede with a short throat
 
Well we are headed to Edmonton tomorrow for some shopping ....lol....and then red deer for a wedding .....I hope to make a few selections there and get the powder I need ......PG doesn't offer a whole lot in 6.5
 
The only moose experience I have with the 6.5x55 was with a 160 gr RN, in a milsurp sporter. This bullet shot the most accurately - about 1.2 MOA.

One shot kill. Bullet mushroomed well and was found under hide on far side.
 
just took a peek over at cabela's Canada , they have 120 and 130 grain x bullets and hornadys 120 grain gmx bullet , nothing from nosler , no tsx's .

this is almost as bad as the shortage of powder going on .......

I have a part box if you're stuck... Can always phone around too. Wholesale showed that they were out of 7mm 140 grainers online, but I happened to find some in the Kelowna store on the way through.
