First Big Game - Need Knife Advice

I bought a red plastic handled Mora when I was quite young (I didn't even know what it was, just a cheap, sharp knife). Price seemed good, edge seemed good, sheath was less than good. Used it for a few years, coveting a Buck General knife. Finally saved the $60 for it and bought one. While it skinned deer nicely, I was forever pricking things while gutting. After using the Buck to skin out a moose, my hand was so tired it was cramped, while my father was still fairly fresh and his knife was just an old 3 1/2" hunting knife he had forever. I went for that Mora and could not find it (last year my son tells me he took it and lost it).
I bought a Gerber 925 blade for gutting and skinning. It seemed to dull easily and I spent time sharpening it during the process. Next knife was a Grohman Russell belt knife that became my knife for 20yrs. A few years ago, I was in an out of the way shop and saw some of those same type knives that had the cheap sheath. I looked and they re Mora knives. $12. Knowing the knife, I bought 2. I did not even touch the edge and gutted, skinned, and butchered a deer with one and didn't sharpen it once.
i bout a dozen of the Mora knock-offs from CanAm, and they work as well, but require sharpening out of the box. Once sharpened, they work just fine. All of the other knives stay home now. I take 2 Moras to the field and have made better sheaths for them.

I have been using an old red handled Mora for quite a few years now. I hate the sheath, and not the best handle ergonomics, but takes a fantastic edge.

I actually never paid attention to the make until I read some of these posts, I had to go look as it described the one I use!

A bright coloured handle is a good choice in a skinning knife...I hate it when I set my knife down to do something and then it takes me a few minutes to find it again!
Yep, getting older sucks!

To the original poster use a small swiss army knife as they're small to fit in your pocket and easy to sharpen while cutting up tuktu(caribou). ;)

I ordered a Mora companion heavy duty knife and a stone sharpener for $50 with shipping. I'll see how I like it before I decide to use it as my carry knife.

I figured I'm using a Swedish Mauser for my rifle, so I might as well go with a Swedish knife too!
