So I purchased my first bolt action rifle Remington XCR Compact Tactical.

I'm getting the Vortex Viper PST 4-16x50 FFP.

I need your help with the other accessories, I want a 20 MOA base(it's important that the base be a direct install I saw some that needed to be bedded, I don't like that.), Rings, a cheek riser(Karsten maybe), and a bipod.

Any ideas on what to get, and where to get them?

Got her put together pictures on post 13.

Rings and base: Nightforce ultralight rings and rail, or, Badger Ordnance rings and rail. This way you buy once for life. Quality bases normally don’t need to be bedded. Don’t forget the Loctite, though. P&D Ent. or Wolverine will have them.

I would avoid the Karsten type cheek pieces. The stock needs to be modified to install them. This could be a problem if you decide to sell the stock. I would never buy a stock someone drilled through. A better alternative would be a TacOps or Triad cheek pad. More comfortable and has a useful pocket. If you still require more height add a layer or two of foam underneath. Some Canadian dealers stock the Eagle cheek pads. I prefer the above brands. Search for Triad Tactical. Pick up a TAB sling and rear bag while you’re there.

Bipod: Harris with swivel and notch legs is the standard. Make sure you buy a Podloc or the CoreTac clone lever. It makes adjusting the tension on the swivel a lot easier. If you’re rich, pick up an Atlas. To figure out what height you need, stack some books on the floor and use them as a rifle rest to test what’s most comfortable prone. Choose based on that measurement. P&D Ent., Wolverine, Triad Tactical, CoreTac Solutions. Your local shooting store may even have some Harris’- but you’ll have to go to a more specialized place for the Podloc.

Lastly- excellent choice for a rifle!

Nice rifle, what caliber? thinking of getting one in .223 myself. Let us know how it shoots when you get optics.

If you intend to shoot past 200 Meters go with a 6-24X40,50...

You can't shoot what you can't see...

That's a bit subjective. On a good day I can spot 308 holes at 400 with my NF 15x.

To each their own, but I think a 4-16x scope is great for all around use. Lower magnification for hunting, higher for target.

.308 I like the knock down punch of the bigger round.

I might hunt coyote in the winter with it, but for now it will be a paper puncher, so I think I will go with a 6-24x50.

Is it really important to have an illuminated reticle?

Any advice on a scope?
I'm looking at either the Bushnell Elite Tactical or the Vortex PST both with the first focal plane both about 1000, I don't want to pay more than that and I don't want to buy used.

Nikon makes a good scope.

I would lean more towards Bushnell as they have a longer history than Vortex. Vortex are pretty new in the game and I haven’t jumped on the wagon. While the Razors have so far proven solid, the PST’s are receiving mixed reviews. I would also consider Sightron for another option in the same price range.

When choosing a scope it really depends on what you want and what you’re willing to sacrifice. I really like Nightforce due to the features and design. The only sacrifice I made was weight, as they are quite heavy scopes. Once you figure out what features are a priority it really helps narrow the choices down.

Also, try and buy a scope that will have good resale value, that way it will make it easier to upgrade in the future. Falcon, Weaver, Burris do not have good resale value…

I'd say go for the standard Harris bipod. Well built and sturdy. Some of te cheaper imitation ones do well too. Would you look into a bag and rest? Just a thought. And very nice rifle! Happy shooting

i can't find any canadian retailers selling the cheek pad's you mention

Bushnell 4-30x50 Tactical- lots of zoom for 1000y and a low 4x for hunting and 90moa of adjustment
Farrell 20moa Base and rings (XLow)
Harris 6x9" Swivel and notched leg bipod- all the above at Mystic Precision

Cheek pad from GetSomeTactical- dont need much of a lift with the really low rings.

i can't find those tacops or eagle cheek pads anywhere in canada on the web.. can i get a hand if anyone has a link?

First Bolt Action Rifle, Now With Accesories.

Well there she is.
Remington XTR Tactical
Badger Ordnance rings Max50 Standard Height steel
Badger Ordnance base 20 moa steel
Vortex Viper PST 4-16x50 FFP
U.S Optics anti cant
Harris Bipod 6"-9" HBRMS

Yes the anti cant is over kill, but this is my first long distance gun and I will use to get good form when shooting. You can see the anti cant won't flip back with the cover on because of the side focus. I took one picture to show the clearance between the scope and barrel, I thaught it was going to be alot tighter, but I think its perfect.

nope the anti-cant isnt over kill at all, cant is probably the 2nd biggest reasn for missed shots at long range, wind being #1, its somthing like 1* of cant will put you 5" off at 1000yds, most people will have a hard time seeing 5 or 6* cant in the x-hair, so it doesnt take much to be off 1mil especially when your out in the hills and dont have a solid level/plumb referance to see

that little knurled nut for adjusting the cant is gonna get real old real quick so go here.. ht tp://t-nuts.com/product_info.php?cPath=73&products_id=229&osCsid=c5b0c914a90f81e52e1b10cb2e6d5c13

Get a new EGW bolt knob installed and it will be perfect. I just got one installed on my 5R mil-spec. They look really nice. Cheers Roscoe

the vortex you have in mind is goot enough it is clear and chrisp detail i have taken a 4x sight out to 800m not a problem i would rather have a low power scope that is chrisp and clear then a high power one that gets fogy

The Anti-Cant devices are great!

Got a similar setup but my rifle is a Tikka T3 Tac with 20" barrel, and an American Defense MFG scope mount.

You'd be surprised, even 1 degree off can put your rounds off quite a bit at ranges past 2 or 300 yards!

That's a nice looking rifle!
