Went out for an unplanned hunt last monday, buddy has enough gear to kit out an army so he lent me some kit and an excaliber axion 305 when i was on vacation for a 4 day weekend. Got to the stand at about 0615, had to wait till 0652 for sunrise. So im sitting in the stand (he is in a different one about 60-80 yrds away). At 0720 in walks a buck. its thick bush so i didnt even see him till 40yrds, so i sat and waited with the scope on him. He took his sweet time but about 10 min later he was about 25 yrds out, standing side on just looking around. let loose the arrow and hit him in the lungs (didnt know this until i got to him). he jumped and ran about 20 yards behind me, stopped when i yelled as I wasnt sure i had hit him and he was running straight to where my buddy was. I have never killed food with a bow before so i didnt know exactly what i was going to see. all the sudden he just fell over like he was drunk. I was calm the entire time, until i started down the ladder then my heart was racing, i could feel the adrenalin. It was awesome. I am going to buy a bow. anyways im sure this type of story has been told a hundred times...

heres a few pics.

5 point

he netted about 70lbs

i donated the pelt to the reserve near my buddies place and cut off the antlers (i was reading the thread on mounting them) its a small rack, but its my first so im gonna make a mount for it or buy a cheap kit.

Thanks!!

I can't wait till December. I will have one week to fill my buck tag. If I can afford a bow in time. I definately don't think I will ever top that hunt. No planning. All borrowed kit and a bunch of luck. Well there was a bit of skill with the bow. Haha

I didn't ever consider bow hunting till that morning. Now I'm hooked. Not even sure I want to shoot one with a rifle.

Way to go!! Nothing wrong with your buck at all. Success IMO should never be measured by antler inches. You scored a great first buck and did it right, you were patient, you waited for the right shot to present itself and then put the arrow right where it needed to go and because of that approach you were successful. Congratulations!! :d

That will change the first time you drop one with a cool bang-flop!!

Congrats on your first archery deer, x-bow or not. My first deer was a similar sized 4 point buck also with a x-bow.

Good for you bro, Congratulations! I love the last minute, not planned, borrowed gear story.... just shot my buck last weekend on a last minute/short sit. Gotta love it!

Great job. Now you're hooked. Just an FYI it's not bow hunting with a cross bow. Its cross bow hunting.

No of course not and it's not fly fishing unless you use floating lines and dry flies, heaven forbid if you use sink tip lines and nymphs?! Get off your purist high horse, nothing like throwing some negative spin on the guy's first kill. I know quite a few guy's who were died in the wool string pullers who made the switch and they still consider it bow hunting.
