I guided for a living for many years for waterfowl, deer, turkeys and fish. Spent 225 days a year plus or minus on the water, depending on the weather of that year! Spent lots of very cold days in Late December and January hunting fowl. Not for the faint of heart but the diehards grind it out. The damage both on the habitat and the entire fish population is incredible! It wasn’t until I killed a bunch and seen the different species they target. It became evident that anything is fair game and they can consume fish in the two pound range. We had a bunch last year with Muskie fry from different year classes. A member of our gun club( shotgun only) was the founding member of muskies Canada Ottawa chapter and when I mentioned our findings to him, well let’s just say he was all ears. They have noticed a great reduction in earlyyear class muskies and the decline has come at an alarming rate. They weren’t sure if it was weather or habitat related but never thought of the predation of cormerants. Our little hunting group have already reduced the population by a little over 200. We are aiming at 1000 this year!
