This is my best group of the day!:D

Was waiting to find some proper ammo as both SIR and Wholesale were stocking 55gr as a max weight choice. Gave up on that idea and went shooting with some AE 55gr cheap ammo. This is out of a new to me Savage 12Fvss with a Bushnell Banner 3x9x56mm scope on Leupold std rings and bases(Waiting for cash for some quality glass). Shooting from the top of my car(standing) with the rifle supported by a soft stuff sack. Did try a few groups at 150m but couldn't get sub MOA with this ammo/scope. Learned a lot on my first day out and even though it was hot(+35c) it was a great start to the MOA game. Just have to spend some money on optics/stock/ammo and will be good to go. Just had to share my joy in getting sub-moa with cheap ammo. Now I just need some time behind the trigger:D

Just an update. My new scope is mounted and ready to try! Going out tomorrow to see if I can shrink the groups some more. Hope that sub 1/2moa is possible with my new found ability to see the bullseye better;) Its a Bushnell 4200 Tactical 6x24x50mm with 44.75moa of elevation and 44moa of windage. Will have to find a longer spot to shoot now that I can see farther. Lol:D

I had same rifle in 308 1 year ago. 1/2 MOA out of the box. with 3-9x scope and factory match ammo. good choice!

Just have to say that quality glass is so worth the $$$! Went out today and even though I had some shakes(too much pop) I could see my targets in great clarity! Love the A/O adjustment and the extra zoom. Got my first sub 1/2 moa group too!:D Not bad for a off day.

Sorry friend...the group doesn't count, because it was measured in Milly meters, has to be measured in fractions of and inch or thousands of an inch. Don't worry , if you've done it once, you can do it again!

What's with this milimiter business?

Tough crowd! For those of you that can't do the math its shown in MOA as well just so everyone can understand. Just happy that I got a factory rifle to shoot sub 1/2 moa at a 109 yards:D Would love to get out again and again to repeat this performance and that is the plan. I want to get a range finder to set up for shooting in the woods but first will be a proper stock. Too many projects on the go but next year when the reloading starts then watch out!:sniper:
If I was to measure in inches do you stop at a 1/16th of an inch or 1/32? How precise do you get? My caliper will do both:cool:

With calipers, you can measure to 3 decimal places in inches but the last number is a bit suspect. After converting to MOA, close enough.

Great shooting. If you haven't considered it, bed that action in the stock. I bet the groups shrink right away.

Jerry

PS Looks like you have straight action given the scope settings.

Your turrent settings are nearly centered. No big deal but nice to see.

I always shim my scopes for longer range shooting so my elevation is always at the bottom. I try and shim my scope so that the windage knob is centered though.

An easy and inexpensive way to shim your scope is with the Burris rings with inserts.

Thanks for the info Mysticplayer, I thought the best quality view through a scope was when everything was centered? Will change the base to match my shooting distances as I reach out farther. Haven't gone past a measured300 yards. looking for a solid stock prior to bedding as my current factory one is warped to the right and rubs the left side of the barrel. Might try a Bell and Carson Medalist when the funds are avalible. Then a bedding job would be worth it. Just need time to figure out how not to shake ect or I am going to break down and use some sand bags:)

If you haven't yet, bed that action in the stock. you can force the action/barrel to be centered in the foreend while the bedding cures. Voila, better fit.

Or else, just get in there with some 60grit and hog it out. I have about 1/4" gap under the bottom. Then I added a piece of plywood with a few shims. The foreend is now quite rigid and sized for my bag. Will eventually build up the sides with lumber and paint.

You can put 3/8" plywood to the sides - 1" behind the front action screw to the front and your stock will be super stiff.

Check out the other posts to see pics on stocks being modified. If you like wood working, these factory stocks can be modified to be any shape you like.

With the Bushnells, they have limited elevation/windage travel given their scope tube size. The up side is that even at full adjustment, the optics are still excellent - the lenses have not been moved out of alignment.

Unlike other scopes which can move the lenses more till they don't work as well. Which limits the 'useable' adjustment.

A compromise...
