Shot a nice doe today with my marlin 1895 SBL in 45-70. Shot was about 60 yards with 405grain cast bullets and 51 grains of varget. Deer went 30 yards and crashed into the dirt dead. no pics forgot the camera but I must say the ammount of damage was a bit more than I was expecting.

the shot was just infront of the onside shoulder exiting through the off side shoulder breaking the leg. Both shoulders were rather blood shot. I just started casting my own bullets as I was running out of comercial cast ones. The few I have left are from cactus plains I think it is. Got them at wholesale but the prices seem to be getting up there plus shipping.

That was my thoughts also.I use a Ruger #3 and so far most of the bullet holes were just holes and not much meat damage. I hit one dead on on the shoulder and it just plowed a big hole through the shoulder and dropped it. But that is with a jacketed bullet. I have never used those hollow point bullets from the factory to hunt with.

Was hunting out in Brazeau are just of the road to wolf lake. Walked around a bunch of cut lines just heading back tot he truck for a trip to another spot and happened to see the deer standing behind a small pine tree.Buddy I was with didnt feel confident in the shot for him so told me to giver if I thought it was ok. Had a good line on it took the shot she jumped took a few bounds then we heard a loud crash. Blood trail was far grater than either of expected.
