Well, I got pretty bored tonight and I have never stripped the lower completely down on my AR 15 (only owned it for a couple months)

Anyways, overall it went pretty good considering I had no instructions. Twice I zigged when I should of zagged but overall it was a good learning experience.

The two things I missed?

1) I didn't know removing the grip would drop the retaining pin for the safety selector. I kinda just forced it out, it didn't really take that much force, but would of been easier if I had done it right.

2) I didn't know that unscrewing the mag release would slam the button so hard into my knuckle....For a minute there I thought I broke my finger

Overall, its pretty decent, the pins used to retain the bolt lock lever and the trigger guard can be pretty difficult, but not with the right tools I've found. :)

... a bigger hammer? :D

Indeed everyone should familiarize themselves better with their new AR by taking it apart. Invaluable info can be gained by a detailed stripping.

Congrats on your new bangstick. ;)

Well, here goes, someone's gonna call me on an error though. I should probably mention that I didn't remove the butt stock cause I thought it was pretty unnecessary.

1) Unload and prove safe (as if I need to say it?)
2) Field strip
3) Remove grip (the bolt is accessible through the hole/opening in the bottom.)
4) Remove safety selector retaining pin and spring, they should fall through a hole in the bottom side of the receiver once the the grip is off.
5) Remove the safety selector by sliding it out
6) Remove the pin closest to the mag well, its probably best if the hammer isn't cocked. Push the pin out using a punch while keeping a hand on the hammer and hammer spring (so it doesn't going flying everywhere when the pin is removed) Pull out the hammer
7) Remove the trigger pin using a punch, again, keep and hand on the trigger grouping to be sure it doesn't go flying.
8) There is an additional piece that mounts on top of the trigger mechanism. I'm not sure exactly what its purpose is, but its fairly obvious how it goes back together if you look at it before you take it apart.
9) Pull the trigger group upward and out of the receiver.

10) Remove the trigger guard. The rearward pin is a pin which is to be pushed entirely through the receiver. The pin closest to the mag well pushes in and drops the front of the trigger guard (kind of like a trap door) The oversized trigger guard (magpul I think) has a hex head pin for the front trigger guard pin, it can be unscrewed to release the front of the trigger guard.

11) Remove the bolt lock lever. This is a pin which needs to be pushed through the rotating point. In addition to that actual bolt lock lever, there is a spring and cap which will fall out once the lever is removed.

12) REmove the mag release. Push the button inwards, even so its below flush with the receiver. Begin unscrewing the otherside (righty tighty, lefty loosey). After a couple rotations, be sure your finger is still pushing the button in, otherwise it will fly out and hit a knuckle (I was using the punch to push it in cause its easier on the fingers). After the unscrewing is done, the mag button comes out along with a spring.

Voila, repeat in reverse for reassembly.

Step 8) - that is the disconnector. VERY important piece.

The take down pins can be removed easily enough as well.
