First duck hunt 2006

We had a great first duck hunt of the year. We set up between two sloughs before dawn. The action was fast and furious, and it didn't take long to run out of shells. No geese yet, but they are coming.

I see mallard, shoveller, bw teal, scaup, redhead, canvasback, goldeneye.

Nice very early season bag. I see a few good eaters there but most will be a bit on the gamey side. In my youth I would shoot at every duck that came within range but now after 32 years at the game I only take the mallards, pintails, cans and redheads. I was forced to eat WAY too many gadwall, spoonies, coots and the like! Still it's great to get out when your fingers and toes stay warm...lol.

I see mallard, shoveller, bw teal, scaup, redhead, canvasback, goldeneye.

All the above, and a coot . Later, at a different spot we took a couple greenheads.
It was kind of funny. The "veterans" shot the coots and small guys, where us "rookies" shot the bigguns. I guess our eyes are better...

Next time out, we're going to bring my dog. He's just a year old shows signs of being a good birdder.
