That is just the start... what did they think would happen when they closed the Grizzly hunt??? It has been seven years now... in the next five years, negative bear/human interactions are going to increase exponentially.
I think a few Grizzlies have always been on Vancouver Island, why wouldn't they be, its not far across from the mainland north of Campbell River. They could easily island hop across.
Glad they finally "officially" acknowledged it . I can recall people I know seeing griz almost 12 years ago and at the time they were told it was just brown black bears. Few years later it was just transient bears and now finally they are actually here.
Many have known and seen these critters on Vancouver Island for many years and finally getting some recognition for pointing this out.
Back in the mid 90's up on Northern Vancouver Island had a Grizzly Bear problem.
The problem being a young bear who had no fear of dogs or man was causing issues on the reservation.
Having called the Co's in Campbell River and being told there are no Grizzly Bears on Vancouver Island let alone Northern Vancouver Island the band member took matters into his own hand and shot said Grizzly Bear with a 303 iirc , then called the Co's in Campbell River to come get said Grizzly Bear.
These are but two stories that I quickly was able to search foogggle and find, but not the one I mention above.
There maybe hope for a renewed hunt in my lifetime and yours, only time will tell.

It does seem that if you don't have letters in front of your name that your sightings don't matter because you are not trained or educated in being able to identify what you are looking at.
I remember nearly 20 years ago now.....all by myself, fishing the Conuma River on the west coast and seeing an impossibly huge "brown" bear hightail it off the beach a few hundred yards down river. It sure looked like a grizz to me.
Later that day I mentioned the sighting to one of my first nations friends in Tahsis and he had some stories to tell of sightings in the area and to be on my toes fishing the Conuma.
Lots of elk in that area and loads of salmon in the summer and fall. Apparently there have always been grizz sightings in that area and usually around the elk herd.
Not surprised. If there is one family I'm certain that there are a dozen more. Vancouver island is bigger then some countries and is mostly unaccessible with lots of grub. Seen tracks near Campbell river a few times that was either a absolute trophy black bear (or bigger) or a grizzly. Always thought it was a grizzly despite every one else's opinion.
