Picked up a cheap Crossman Vantage ($110) to see what all the 1000fps airgun fuss was all about....holy #### the first few rounds I put through it sounded like subsonic .22lr with a puff of smoke and the associated stench of burnt oil...pretty sweet but I hope it stops that crap soon.

once the oil in the bore is gone..

just use degreaser ( i use brake cleaner ) to clean barrel after storage..

no oil.. no diesel issue

I have a conventional springer.. How is the recoil on the nitro piston??

This one is a springer too...discontinued model which was on clearance sale. I was weighing the pros n cons of spring vs NP and decided for $100 the springer would suit me better. No recoil, but the damn crack from dieseling is wicked. I cleaned the bore out before firing, it must be residue in the chamber that's burning.

caution... it does not take too many detonations to explode your main seal :)

I had to replace mine after two or three... noticed accuracy was dropping off, as well as velocity. Blown out chunk of the seal was the culprit..

One-two drops of chamber oil every 500.. or once a season if stored IMHO

I emailed the shop I got it from, and buddy said to get some crossman silicone oil, put 2 drops in the chamber and it should stop the dieseling. It's not combustible and mixes with the oil, which apparently takes a while to ooze out and can cause dieseling for quite awhile. Sure enough that did the trick.... No more loud cracks, sounds like an airgun now.
I still had the targets up from the first time shooting it, I only put 3 pellets through it as I didn't like the sound it was making. Without the detonations, I'm about 1-1.5" higher at 30m which tells me it's a bit slower but not too much.
I'll run it over the chrony tomorrow if I get time...wish I would have done that those first 3 shots lol.
This is the oil he recommended http://www.crosman.com/rmcoil
It's a really basic gun, but shoots quite well. Zeroed it with the irons tonight and I was impressed. Sights are plastic with fiber optic inserts... Not super durable, but work fine. Trigger is passable... Reminds me of an SKS trigger lol.

Got her scoped now, really decent shooter, plugging a 2" spinner from 40m every time.

similar to the Quest/Phantom line it looks like..

likely uses the same seals and maybe trigger parts... I put an after market trigger in and it works great!!

that's the right oil too.. some people confuse the other thick red stuff Crosman puts out.

when I had my .177 Quest, I was shooting pennies at 30m. Almost goes through a penny.. usually puts a good crack in it (depending on the year and alloy type)

Ran it over the chrony, 950fps with 8.3gr lead, and 975fps with 7.9gr lead....pretty close to the advertised 1000fps...

I just got a Crosman Vantage and put two drops of silicone Crosman brand oil in the transfer port the other day. Scared the crap out of me when I fired it, muzzel flash, loud bang, sparks from the breech, and a hole right though my steel pellet trap. It took another 4 or 5 shots to settle down to normal. I had thought the point of the silicone oil was to avoid this happening.

I have both the Crosman Pelloil and the Crosman silicon chamber oil. It was the silicon chamber oil that lit up like a powder burning cartridge. I knew the Pelloil would lite up under high pressure but thought the silicone oil would not, I thought wrong.

Unless you disassembled and cleaned before using silicone oil you may have just caused more of the original lube to migrate into the compression chamber. Silicone doesnt diesel
