First coyote of the season this morning just after 09:00. Female, nice thick fur already although here in Foothills AB last 10 days we had over a foot of snow and temps went as low as -22 overnight.

She came skulking though the Aspens as they do and I took her at 55 yards with a Sako Finnfire II in .17 HMR using Hornady 17 gr V-Max ammunition. One shot DRT.

Very nice looking yote, congrats! My deer hunting property is getting hammered by a trio of coyotes, I normally wait until the new year to go after them but four mature does last night and only one fawn between the bunch of them tell me I better get to work fast!

Keep shooting' them deer killers!

nice start congrats with the 17 hmr to boot
did the bullet stay inside at that range

The bullet passed through although there was a decent exit wound (for a 17gr bullet). It was a neck shot. I suspect had I gone for a double lung/heart that it would have just fragmented inside the chest cavity.

I've always thought the 17hmr a little light for coyotes, but you proved me wrong!

My .17 HMR is dialed in for 100 yards and that would be beyond the max distance I would use it on coyotes. Realistically, I think no more than 75-80 yards to ensure a clean kill. I think I might also step up to the 20 grain HP XTP bullet that Hornady uses in their Varmint Express ammunition.
