Good day,

I just bought my first firearm, a Marlin 795, and I have a few questions.

1. What brand/type fo cleaning rod should I get?
2. What brand of oil and gun cleaner would you suggest?
3. Any other good tips?

Storing question:
Currently, I am storing it in its case with a lock, the action is open right now, I was wondering if I should close the action?
When I was going to store it I closed the action and the extractor seemed to press against the cable lock and I didn't know if that was good for it(does it casue any damage)? (Before you say "just put it in a safe". I'm moving soon and will get a safe then.)

When you buy your cleaning rod/brushes/jags etc make sure you get them all with the same screw thread. I've accumulated a bunch of cleaning stuff and I'm always messing around trying to get the screw thread on one piece matched with another.

Good choice of 22. 10/22 cost way too much for what you get

You can get basically anything. Outters kits is cheap and work just fine.

Be careful putting it back together it is really easy to bend the recoil spring. It will still work but it bothers me.

Keeping it open does not make a difference. My research has found that springs wear out when be compressed and uncompressed over and over again. So sitting in one position won't matter

I always advocate for a trigger lock. I think cable locks are stupid unless its for a lever action.

I have a rifle that would refute that statement. In my experience, acclimating the rifle to the interior temperature of the house before you close the case is all that needs to be done. If you forget, even once, rust will find it's way in there.

Yeah what he said. Do not store your rifle in the case let it breath and keep a light coat of oil on it when it is being stored for a while. I have seen so many rifles totally ruined because they were stored in a gun case.

A case is one of the only practical places for me to be storing it right now. I haven't fully cleaned it yet, should I just leave it the way it is?

X2.

Lightly oiled rifle in case is fine for short term storage. However good chance it will attract moisture and rust if left long term in case. If leaving long term, or even in a gun safe, I strongly recommend using a gun sock treated in silica. Will not only protect gun from rust, but inevitable bumps and bruises you get taking them in and out of safe etc. Guns socks also allow you to get more in the safe.

Re. Cleaning question. Lots of good products out there and 'how to' YouTube videos on the subject and just about any and every other gun, shooting and or repair question you have. I personally like Ballistol which cleans, protects and lubricates.
