First Flint Build

. the tang screw will be more of a bolt with a captive nut under the trigger plate.

Probably too late now, but if the tang bolt is going through the trigger plate, I would have drilled and tapped the trigger plate for the bolt to screw into. Since the tang screw often angles down and does not pass through the trigger plate at 90 degrees, I silver soldered a long shaft on the tap that I use and tap the trigger plate with it and the barrel in place, using the hole through the stock as a guide to get the angle correct.

The tang bolt cannot go thru the trigger plate due to location, all the set trigger stuff is in the way. am thinking about welding on lugs and pinning the trigger group. that or screws. the tang bolt is a reused item from a belgian shotgun, i`m having a heck of a time finding slot head bolts and screws, am making them from stock machine screws, my drill press and a file. that is next in the agenda.
that aside, all the pipes are made. the top one has a slight flare. they are in, just need to finish sand and polish the top two. don`t mind the poor inletting, that will disappear in the finishing.....i hope

have trigger mounted, lock bolts in and tang bolt done. shaping is continuing on the butt stock, and barrel bedding getting done soon. lots of the chip outs around the inlets have disappeared as the finishing progresses. have experimented with forging my own butt plate, and will be going with that. photos to follow. trigger guard also coming soon. i`ll be shooting this thing before end of the year!.....maybe

One way of making a buttplate is to use a curved steel flat, and a "U" shaped piece of black iron pipe or steel tube, welded together.

its 99% done. poured pewter nose cap, steel butt plate which needs finishing. needs rear sight. am keeping the barrel removable to facilitate cleaning, so retaining pins will be replaced with keys soon. kept it as simple as I could. am making the ramrod as well, its not finished yet either. feel free to ask any questions.

thanks. and the first shot from the shoulder after proofing was a flash in the pan. spent ten minutes getting enough powder thru the touch hole with the vent pick to pop the ball out...about 15-20 gr. first dry ball ever.
other than that and the learning curve of cleaning the flint, pan and frizzen every other shot, the next 16 balls went where they were pointed. and it is a sweet feeling to fire something that you made yourself.
