First Focal Plane Variable Magnification

Hey Guys,

I am in the market for a new scope. I am interested in making mid to long range shots (300-800 yrd) with my Weatherby Vangaurd DBM 270 Win. I have been doing alot of research on scopes and have narrowed it down to Mil-Dot reticle and must be First Focal Plane or Mil-Dot fixed magnification. If I go with the fixed magnification what Mag should i be looking for 6x, 8x 10X? And if i go with the variable magnification FFP what should i be looking for? Also Tactical turrets would be a plus. Please give me some suggestions. The price range I am looking in is 300-500$
 
Why not use a second focal plane variable and set it to the magnification at which the mil dot ranging is a known value? You can later zoom in or out if necessary. I don't like the crosshairs getting thicker as i zoom in on a first focal plane.
 
why mil - dot?

mil or moa hash marks are far superior.

if fix, x10 is the standard.

I do like the ffp for the ease of use in regards to holds for quick shots and after using one will never go back to sfp, but that doesn't mean their is no place for sfp just not in my type of shooting application.

if you are so inclined head over to snipershide.com and/or accurate shooter and READ the stickys they have in the optics section.

but in your price range you are going to be relegated to SFP or fixed , as entrance level FFP is in the 1000$ range.

Falcon used to be pretty good, they had some qc issues but I would still buy one in your price range. Other choice is fixed 10 power bushnell elite for under $300 you can't beat the the value. You can upgrade it later if need arises and I think everybody should have a fixed power scope(for back up that is)
 
IMO, if you can, save a little more money and you won't regret it. $600-$900 can get you into something you'll keep for a long while. I'm not sure but I'll assume you're going to be shooting paper at those ranges. I started out in the same boat and it cost me a lot in the end to upgrade.

Take a look at something like the Vortex Viper PST's or Sightron SII's and SIII's. I'd also agree that Bushnell Elite's are a good budget scope if you can't spend the cash.

I don't mind fixed 10x up to around 600 yards but past that I definitely like the variables. For 300-800 I think 4-16x would be lots. In a variable power scope you want to have a decent focus or parallax adjustment.

And I'll second Caustic on the MOA or MIL reticle.

It's much quicker to measure out your misses and calculate the clicks to compensate.
 
In that price range, for the features you're after (except for the mil dot I think), one brand you should look at are "Falcon" scopes. Frontier ^^ carries em. These would compare well to say, a Bushnell but have tactical turrets, FFP, are about $450. I have one on a M70 300WM. They're a rugged build made in the UK I believe.
