First game down with the 290 gr Matrix in his 9.3X62 CZ.

Friend of mine just came by with a couple of 290 gr that he used to take a nice bull moose.

Started out at a tad under 2400 fps from his CZ 9.3X62 carbine. He has been sitting here, relating to me how impressed he is with the bullet.

Retained weight is 281 gr after being washed and brushed clean!

So, what is that, 96% retained weight?

The other one hit a heavy bone and kept only around 92%.

Pretty good first experience with Matrix!

Agreed. Classic expansion. I have a couple of boxes of 290gr I purchased from Marshal but with the initial accuracy I got with the 285gr prvi bullets, I haven't tried the 290gr Matrix out,;) yet.

Too bad Marshall has moved to the lower mainland. I used to directly drive to his house at Crofton to get my .366 of 270 grains
Well,c-fbmi swears by 270grain, why not? likes 290 grain. Which one is better?
I remember John bareness now uses 250 grains

Same here, a mere 9 km. ;)Who knows. He may see the light and move back.:)

And if the friend would have been using a 30-06 with old Dominion Kling Kore soft point, the results would have been about the same.
And if the 30-06 had been using Dominion Copper Point expanding, there likely would have been only one bullet to display.
Sorry Ted, just couldn't resist.

Ah yes elker, however you must also understand that Ted believes adamantly that the 270 is a big game cartridge...........so what does that tell you?

Seriously though, Ted and I are using decidedly different cartridges in 9.3 with decidedly different expectations. My 9.3X300 WM is not only a thumper but also has serious long range capabilities at over 3000 fps, I am looking more to enhance it's potential long range capabilities by using a moderate weight bullet for caliber in a more aerodynamic shape. Ted's focus is more on penetration and energy transfer in a moderate range, moderate velocity cartridge.
Given the performance of the 270 gn on a grizzly at less than 30 mtrs, I am quite happy with the overall performance of this cartridge/bullet combo for the hunting I was doing. Were I to want to use a 9.3 for back up as a guide or even with a buddy where I weren't the primary hunter I would probably elect to use a 285-300+ gn bullet if I were using the 62mm case or the 300 WM case. I would like to see a little more penetration than I got with the 270 gn at close up range like this if I were playing the back up role. Obviously because I would not be shooting until the situation was becoming somewhat dire. Whether that be an escaping animal which would likely present a less than optimal target at which to shoot or an incoming aggressive animal needing to be dissuaded immediately. In these situation LR capability would likely be irrelevant, but penetration and energy transfer would be paramount.
Ted and I don't always agree on bullet weights for caliber either, he tends, as does Boomer, to work in the upper, upper weight for caliber and regularly with round nose bullets, I tend to work more at the upper moderate weight range and with more aerodynamic shapes with an eye for close up energy and to extend the range at which I can deliver this energy...........we are both quite successful and experienced hunters so I guess although from slightly different school of external ballistics neither one of us is wrong, per say. And as we will both tell you, bullet construction is far more critical to successful hunts than shape or weight within reason.
Sorry , didn't mean to speak for you Ted, but I know we have discussed this at length many times..........pretty sure I know your thoughts on this topic.

Better than the Hornady 286gr that blew apart like confetti on a cow moose shoulder at 190 yards a couple years ago! I now use Partitions exclusively...........Harold great bull /gun and caliber!!!!

Unfortunately he doesn't do house pick up anymore, I've asked since he's now local to me. I'm a Barnes guy but I may have to order some if his 270gr to try in my .375 Ruger.

285 grains maybe lol ...

Here you go, Daniel.

Not only are they a great game bullet, but they are very accurate.

Here's the recovered 270 gr 9.3 bullet that broke the big tubercle on the near shoulder, crushed two vertebrae, and went through the far shoulder of that big grizzly I got three years ago this month.

IIRC, the recovered bullet weighs 246 gr, 91% of original weight. I will weigh it again.

One shot was all it took.

Hi Elker,

I have used the Matrix 270gr, as seen in the picture above, the 285 round nose, 300 gr spitzer flat base, and 320 gr round nose in the 9.3X62. They all work. :)
