first goose hunt

Make sure your cam and concealment is good and when you see or hear the geese, do not move until you are taking the shot.

That's what has worked for me, others will have more advice to give.

Good luck!

guess you've scouted and all that. So put out your decoys. Set up blind etc. You will hear the geese coming they are generally noisy, but occasionally one or a few may catch you unaware. My best advice is keep your shots close. These birds are big so one tends to think they are closer than they really are. Also try to stay on the same bird until it is down. They can be tough to finish so be prepared to give them another one. Also keep an eye on them after the shot. I have watched unhit birds fold up 200-300 yards away. h and stay still when they are approaching. Good luck.

Don't forget to leade the birds. Despite how close they get you still need to give'm some leade. You will have a great time. Enjoy and good luck.

Plus, leading correctly increases the chances for head and neck kills and less pellets in the breast.

Biggest tip for a beginner - don't call unnecessarily when you are in your blind - even if you cannot hear or see geese. Occasional hail calls can help as long as they're good ones. But don't "experiment" too much in the field. Save that for before and after the hunt.

Don't call as much as you think you have to. Geese care about bad notes way better than they seem to care about good ones!

Keep your forehead and eyes concealed well. A lot of people don't think about that. Watch your shadows. If geese aren't coming in close, stand up and look to see if anything is casting a conspicuous shadow.

Shoot them in the lips. Also pick one bird out, don't flock shoot, alot of people get over whelmed when a flock comes in. Pick out one bird, deal with it, then if you have shells left pick another.

Exactly what I was going to say. I'll admit it. I've gotten goose fever and shot into a group of them. It doesn't happen twice.

Enjoy it. It's quite possibly the most exciting hunting I've done. Probably because it's so action packed for a short time

Wellthat was fun!

Got to the spot about 5:15pm, with friend from work. The other guy had been there since 4;30pm, set up the decoys. We sat in a corn field row hidden about 30-40yds from the open spot where the decoys sat. the other 2 guys had calls and were trying to call in geese we could see flying around the field but not close to us. After about an hour 1 goose by himself flew into our decoy trap. As he came into land I heard the more experienced guy say"there he is boys, take him". I lifted my 12ga. Winchester pump loaded with 3" BB shot and fired off 2 shots...miss, guy next to me fires off 2 shots from his double barrel... miss. Finally last guy lifts his Remington 870 and bang down goes the bird. Disappointed I missed but in all it was fun.
