First gopher of 2010

The pastures I hunt are less than a section all told. Was some pretty heavy infestations on the high spots. Where abouts in Ab are you Mike?

Mike PM'd me with the exact location east of Calgary.

Met a gal on the weekend who's parents have a farm south of Vermilion, she told the place is infested. Says permission will be no problem. FS

Done! Last weekend, north of Moose Jaw and a bit south of Bethune. So that would be January 9th at about 2 in the afternoon. Close to Buffalo Pound.

We were out coyote hunting and were driving to a new spot when my friend and I saw something dark on the edge of the field. We stopped and were floored when we saw a gopher playing in the snow. It looked like he had dug through the snow from underneath because there was an incredible amount of dirt on top of the snow.

He was a fat one too.

No pics, no prize :p

I'm in, but I'm a little far north to probably win this contest. Doesn't bother me to try though.
Can't wait for the squeaks to emerge again.

I'd go try and find it, but with the coyotes around here... I bet he was gone two minutes after we left. I'm not to worried about the prize anyway but does this count?

Isn't it going to snow even down south on Saturday? It is here.
The weather was looking pretty good last week but now it's getting cold and snowy here again. Don't think I'll have anything for a while. :(

Hey guys i never shot any of these gophers befor but i might try it soon . Is a good 22 cal rifle all you need or is a small centre fire better to do the job im thinking of ammo cost

.22 is ideal because of the cost. Centerfires are more fun of course, but it's not too much of a task to go through a brick of 22 ammo in a day on a good gopher field.

X2! A lot of people seem to want to give up on the .22 LR but I like it best because it doesn't hurt your ears.

I guess the compromise is to go with a .22 WMR as ammo is still cheaper than .223 but you still get the ability to reach out to 100 yards with lots of punch.

Wow....two summers ago Prosper and I shot about 1500 in one day...
A thousand in one summer?? Thats dry shooting man. Unless it was over a 3 day period.

Icehunter and I saw 1 gopher standing up when we were stalking 2 coyotes on opening day for deer Nov 1st/09. (Bagged one of the yotes at about 270 yrds with my .308)
