I was out hunting coyotes this morning when I saw this guy just trucking down the train tracks. 250 yard shot with the .243 put him down. I found it was a little weird that he was out in this weather (-8 with the snow flying), not sure due to sickness or hunger but I can never turn down a ground hog shoot.

Im not sure of the groundhogs mating rituals, but heard that the males will sneak into a hybernating females den in late winter and take advantage of her?...
It may be a way mother nature gets the ball rolling on maximum production of baby ground hogs.

Chuck gets up in the middle of the night to pee and gets shot. snicker.
"...a little weird that he was out in this weather..." That's for sure. Earliest I've ever shot one was 3 March. Early Spring that year. They're usually underground until the weather warms up.

Sometimes parasites will drive them out of their dens in the middle of Winter. I personally haven't seen one out of it's den at this time of Winter.

He may not have been able to find his den, happens in spring with snow,or pussy hunting and lost his way!

You fvcking capped Wiarton willie ...lol.
Its going to be a long winter thanks to you.!

I laughed for a while reading this one.

I am still puzzled on why he was out. A VIA Train had just passed kicking up lots of powder snow and when it cleared he had appeared. At first I could not tell if it was a coon or a large muskrat. After seeing it was a pig I just had to drop him. Responding to previous posts, the soonest I can remember seeing them start to come out of their holes was during spring melts. I recall seeing soggy looking ground hogs feeding on the newly revealed grass roughly around late March/April
