My Grouse day here on Vancouver Island was sort of Crap...

Started off by discovering that a logging company had turned my Grouse spot from last year into a moonscape...even the creek, and the waterfall where gone. Nothing but turned up stumps for acres. :(

Then I decided to walk down a back road to try to find some unspoiled part, and was met by a big pick-up truck parked in the middle of the access road, and then 6 rangy very aggressive mutts charged out of the brush at me, and began to size me up circle etc.

I was cradling my 80 year old pump .22 in my arms and planning my next move when an old Indian guy in the truck started yelling "Bad Dogs", He didn't even get out to apologize or even to wrangle his reservation mutts back in, or even to simply say hi, he just kept yelling 'Bad dogs".

I surmised that one could forget finding Grouse in the vicinity with those mutts loose in the brush...

So I back tracked and headed off to Gordon River, and had a little walk about...nothing, squat nadda.

But a Km or so on the road on the way back to Lake Cowichan some sort of dark brown ferret/ mink critter ran across the road in front of me, and while I was slowing down to check that out approx 4 Grouse ran across the road as well.

I pulled over and got out for a closer look, and to ID them, but they wanted nothing of me, and scampered off cooing, and clucking out of camera range up a very steep hillside thick with brush...while I was checking this out behind my on the other side of the road a big black bear decided to boot back down into the ravine, making a hell of a racket.

So I didn't bring anything home to eat, but I saw some critters, and took some pics.

I'm Kind'a depressed over the amount of development going on in this area. :(
Sorry if you have already read this boring rant on the Hunting BC site.

I think I need to Move to Prince George...did I say that? :D

lots of ruffies around here if you're willing to walk. have limited out many times.

now blues are what I'm after, but after a few days running arounf the alpine I have only seen one :(

have other plans for the bunny, but need a few first ;)

Calum, I think the problem is that you might still not have enough experience identifying grouses on the road from distance. Usually I could see the chicks even 100 yards away if the road is straight enough. What you should do is......:)

I noticed alot of these nice Pheasants around here but there not B.C Pheasants  Really nice birds some kinda indian ipiains or something really long tails they act wild,
Can i shoot them if there in the bush ?
I think there tame ones gone wild and have done quite well.

Bet there good to eat. :D

well dont be planning that move yet if you have a issue with logging we are the capital of the province when it comes to timber harvest between quesnel and houston BC , but hey we could stop logging and you could whipe yer @ss with a recycled plastic bottle or an owl :D :D :D :D :D :D :D :D

A Hunter Neighbor pointed out I should wait until after the drought we are having...they are too skittish during droughts. :runaway:

Some of us actually use our firearms and practise with them to hunt, or are you one of these self protection, terrorist behind every door gun owners?
If the fellow wanted to eat chicken he would have bought it.::rolleyes:

Vancouver Island is developing ridiculously quickly :(.

One place I do recommend for grouse is parts of Mount Benson and the Nanaimo Lakes area; plenty of hunting ground in there.

Cowichan still has tonnes of places to go, the only problem is that no one has keys for timby west's gates.

Trail bike ;)
I hate them Bloody gates there everywhere these days trying to funnel us like sheep.
Crown land my ass the forest companys have no right to lock us outa Canadas Wilderness. I have No problem with Logging at all, the access rds were the one good benefit to hunters! Now there Locking us out
I bought a Trail bike.

North Island companies long ago realized leaving gates open to the public is way more cost effective than down time due to crews being held off by jammed locks.

Calum,

If you ever get off the rock and visit up here in the interior I will show you more ruffies and sharptails than you will ever want to pluck.

Also, if your legs are a lot younger than mine I will point out where you can find some good blue grouse shooting.
