OK, I know this has prob been debated a million times before but its so hard to sift through all the posts...

I'm looking to buy my first gun and its pretty much down to the 10/22 or the 597. Its hard for me to tell prices online cos they all have different options etc.

- Are they about the same price if I just want a stock one without all the extras? If not, which one is cheaper?

- If accuracy is not the first concern, which one would you guys choose as far as durability, maintenance and just how fun to shoot overall?

- last question, is there anywhere I can go that's kinda close to Toronto where I can look at both in person?

Thanks!

A plain jane 597 is about 100 dollars less than a plain 10\22. I have had a 10\22 stainless\synthetic, real tough and pretty reliable. I never modded it and it shot like #### with most ammo. I gave it what it loved ( Blaser) and never had a hiccup with the stock magazine.

The second question you are asking along with the first is which has better mag. The 597 wins handsdown IMO. Not one single problem ever with my MB products 30 rounder. Nothing but problems with the BC 25 rounders though.

10\22 has a huge amount of aftermarket options. Many, many time what there is for the 597. As far as your criteria I like the 597

Well.....

Your going to hear from the 10/22 modification group/aftermarket junkies. they will tell you the 10/22 hands down.

I'll tell you this, the 10/22 is a real pleasure to strip down and clean. It's very easy and just as easy to put back together. The Remington not so much. My friend has a first generation 597, and it's a piece of crap. But that's where these rifle got their bad reputaton from. But even though his rifle doesn't cycle very well, it's very accurate. My 10/22 was a pile of garbage. It shot shotgun patterns instead of rifle groups, and say what you will about it having the most reliable magazine, mine jammed on shot 6 or 7. If you want a rifle to soup up and hotrod, save your money and buy a stock CZ autoloader. Instant hotrod. If you want a fun rifle to play with, buy a new model 597 and some really good cleaning supplies. $150 will buy you the rifle, and another $150 for a case of ammo. That's alot of shooting for the price of a 10/22.

What's a 597? Seriously, the Ruger is a pretty good gun and it gives you a lot of options down the road.

I have both guns and like both guns. A 597 HB laminated and a 10-22 Deluxe sporter which both have their purpose for my use. What you have to do is decide what you want from the gun.

Either gun will serve you well - just decide on the configuration from plinker to target use.

The 597 is a great rifle by itself. If you want something accurate, get that bad boy.

If you want a gun that can expand as your gun tastes broaden (and they will) think about the 10/22. The 10/22 has a lot of stocks, barrels and little parts you can buy to really personalize your 10/22 into exactly YOU would like out of a .22 rifle.

I personally would recommend the 10/22. It's a bit more expensive, but the aftermarket stuff is almost more fun than buying new guns. Almost.

a buddy of mine has a new 597. I think it's a piece of crap. I don't know, maybe he got a lemon..

Another choice if your tight on funds is the Marlin model 60. It is very reliable, very accurate out of the box and under 150 with a scope and rings.. mind you the scope and rings are kinda crap that come with it.

Or get the 10/22. I have one on the way, mainly because of all the mods you can do to them and the 50rnd mags :D :D :D So if I remember this thread, I will come back and tell you how I feel about the 10/22 once I have had a chance to play with it "getting the stainless model"

What ever you decide to get, get what YOU want ;)

But honestly.. I love Remington, and if your eyeballing that nasty 170 dollar puke green model "Same one buddy has".. I would say stay away from it. The other more expensive 597's look a bit better, but then your getting at the price of a nice Ruger 10/22. So it is mainly what you want to do with said 22 when it all comes down to it.

Good luck

awesome, thanks for the help guys!

quick question though...by "hard to strip down and clean"...do you mean "it just takes awhile but is still fun" or "it takes awhile and is a ##### to do"

I do all my own work on my truck and motorcycle so I like stuff like this but sometimes its just not fun.

The 10/22 is a breeze to take apart and put together. The trigger takes a bit of learning, but after that it's a piece of cake to take the gun apart down to the very last piece.

10/22

i love shooting them with no problems, + i took both of mine apart last night (completely) and it was so damn easy it was unbelievable. lol. its a fantastic gun with tons of mods

The 10/22 is a piece of cake. The 597 has alot of little parts, but the model 60 Marlin is far worse. If you so much as sneeze, springs appear from thin air and poke you in the eye. Then the whole unit spontaniously combusts and turns to a pile of parts in your hands. :runaway:

As long as you have the allen key that comes with the 597, you'll be able to strip it. It doesn't take more than a minute, it's not that hard.

I like my 597 because it was accurate and reliable out of the box. Personally, I didn't want to buy the more expensive 10/22 and then dump a few hundred dollars worth of mods into it just to make it shoot well.

I scoped my 597 for $50 and I can easily shoot dime sized groups at 50m all day long with CCI Blazer ammo. It will cycle reliably with anything else, even subsonics, but it likes the Blazers the best. I just picked up a box of Federal AutoMatch .22's, and I'll see how it goes.

You won't regret a 597, unless you're into pointless, expensive, "tacti-cool" mods. I'd rather have an AR myself... but to each their own.

I was also thinking about the 10/22 before I decided on the 597. I think I got more rifle for less $$$. The stock 10/22 does need mods to shoot as accurately as a bone stock 597.
