First gun, 597 or 10/22?

597 with heavy barrel. I think it is 200$ as opposite to 1022 with noodle thin barrel for 300$. 597 is wise decision you will never regret. Accuracy is everything - you will learn that fact rather quick.

But then again, I myself sometimes think 1022 project. Too bad nobody sells receivers, I would hate sinking 300$ for a rifle only to strip it and discard barrel and stock and half of trigger group.

Check out the Marlin line, cheaper more accurate, wears out quicker. For dirt cheap get a Savage semi, pure crap. FWIW I have 2 10-22s and I like 'em a lot.

10/22.......so many more options. I wouldn't buy a cheap semi .22, I'd get a bolt gun instead. For a semi .22 you want something reliable, 10/22 runs very well.

A semi-auto would not be my choice for a first gun. Looking in the vault, there's 6 s/a guns in there that never see field carry or use- a 10-22 is in that lot. My first reach is still a bolt gun- something I keep coming back to, if I want meat in the pot. That bolt is a repro 52 Sporting. Second go to gun is a very old Marlin 39-A lever action- almost as accurate as the 52. I'm no fan of aluminum receivers. The head on a grouse has k/z that's a bit smaller than 1/2" dia, and the s/a's just can't keep up to the bolt when it comes to shooting like that. Just my 2 cents...

The 597's in .22LR were a pain if the guide rods were overtorqued. (They are held in place by a pair of setscrews). If you tightened them too much the rods warped enough to cause cycling failures of the bolt. The first gen magazines for the 597 were crap as well.

However a 597 does have a much nicer ability for mag swaps. Has a last shot bolt hold open as a standard feature. And is far more accurate out of the box.
25% cheaper or so than a stock 10/22.

Yes a 10/22 can become a hugely accurate and customized tack driver. By then however you have a $500-$1500 .22LR. You may as well go get an olympic class .22 for the upper end of 10/22 customs.

It depends what you want to do with it. Just plink? 597 hands down IMHO. Upgrade later for custom rifle? 10/22.

awesome, thanks guys...I'm pretty sure I've decided on a 597. My first gun so I'm just gonna keep it stock and learn as much as I can before forking out for a "proper" rifle.

for that matter, my go to is a nylon 66-vintage 69 and still going like the everready bunnie

I prefer the Remington; it's more accurate and looks better ;)

With a decent scope and a 30round magazine 597 is pretty fun to shoot.

10\22 199.99
scope 69.99
shopping at bass pro, fun and priceless

270+tax out the door for a reliabe and accurite rifle thats fun to shoot and easy to clean.

i thought the 597 looked cheaper...
maybe if you compare a basic 597 to 10/22 target. But a basic 10/22 with a barrel band doesn't looks that great or sophisticated IMO.

To me 597 looks like a 'big gun' when (basic) 10/22 looks like a cheap plinker :nest:

ruger 10/22 all the way. It's a great gun as is, but it's like buying a ford mustang, the aftermarket mods are available everywhere if you later decide to go that way. I have owned four of them.P.S. try a variety of different brands of ammo with any semi auto before you start buying bricks of it. Mine did not like federal (misfeeds/jams) but fed and shot great groups with poorboy winchester wildcats.

An other vote for the 10/22.

Will last for decades. If your trigger happy like me find out what ammo it likes buy a couple bricks and a bunch of mags and go crazy.

Man: Oh I'm sorry, what's this little thing over here? It's so tiny. It's so unimportant looking.
Man's son: Look Dad, they even had to paint it yellow so anyone would pay attention to it. What is it?
