First gun, 597 or 10/22?

awesome, thanks guys...I'm pretty sure I've decided on a 597. My first gun so I'm just gonna keep it stock and learn as much as I can before forking out for a "proper" rifle.

Had one 10-22 before, sold it. The worst design ever( that is why need mod)
Not user friendly, ugly, not reliable, quality are hit and miss and that is why need mod. out of box accuracy is poor. But if you want to learn about a gun, then the 10-22 is a good choice because you will come up something need to be fix or little modifly, tons of informations that you can found on the net. You will get some hand on skills and general knowledge about how the action cycle and how a semi rifle work. I did learn a little from the time that I own my 10-22. bottom line is if something too perfect and you won't learn anything from it.

OK, so far we get:

Pro's for 597:

- cheaper than a 10/22
- more accurate than a 10/22 out of the box
- comes with a bolt hold-open feature

Pro's for 10/22:

- there's more after-market stuff for it than a 597 right now

Agreed!!!! :D :D :D :D :D

I had a 10/22 (read: HAD). It wasn't as accurate as I wanted.

I now have a 597. It costs less and is way more accurate!

I did spend a small amount extra and put a VQ hammer and extractor in it which helped trigger pull and no ejection problems (even before new extractor).

:D:D:D:D:D:D:D:D:D:D

That said, I've seen some heavy barrel (target versions or pimped-out standards with LOTS of aftermarket mods) produce some incredible groups.

So, I still say 597 for out-of-the-box fun!!!

lol, there is more mods for the 10/22 than there ever be for the 597, even in the many years to come...

its the best selling semi auto rimfire ever, everyone and their dog has one...
as for being unreliable? are you kidding me?

Cheers

The 10/22 isn't user friendly? My girlfriend figured out how to use it in 5 minutes. She's from Japan. The land where nobody has ANY guns. She had zero knowledge of guns beforehand, apart from the safety tips I had given.

The 10/22 is ugly? Alright. The Remington 597 is ugly.
Wow. That argument sure gets you far, eh?

Not reliable? I guess you haven't been on the boards here too long then. Last year there was one guy posting pictures of his 10/22, he had shot over 5000 rounds without a single cleaning and it hadn't FTF yet.

Quality is always going to be a hit or a miss. Show me any rifle, there will always be lemons in the bunch.

Next please. :slap:

I've fired both, I own a 597 camo stock, browning bipod, 30 round mags, nice muzzle break, etc... it's okay. I'd go with the 10/22 though.

don't make a difference 10/22 or 597... they are pos, junk...
I have 2 10/22, they are junk... My buddy has 597 it's junk
do yourself a favor get marlin 795 or marlin 60 (mag/tube feeding) if you don't want to spend to much they are just fune, if y willing to spend an extra get CZ

never tried a 597.have shot at least 3 10/22's.
10/22 hands down.it's a small gun better suited for smaller ppl.
never had a prob with any 10/22 i've ever used.older ones are better.anything new may suffer from qc. probs. since so many are made in a mass production line.

So, biased? ;)

Okay. :)

Is the 597 a larger gun better suited for larger people? ;)

never had a prob with any 10/22 i've ever used.

Lucky! :)

older ones are better.

Yet the newer ones can be dry-fired safely? ;)

anything new may suffer from qc. probs. since so many are made in a mass production line.

News to me - sincere thanks for the heads-up.
:)

Just kidding?

After seeing the bump-fire thread, I can't wait to get out with my Butler creeks.

Please post a link to the thread?

About 3 years ago I had the same choice to make. 597 or 10/22.

The deciding factors for me where:

1) The rotary mag system on the 10/22
2) The fact that the mag sits flush with the rifle

Also at the time the Remington had magazine problems. This was the deciding factor. I'm very happy with my Ruger K10/22T target rifle. It's accurate, reliable and just plain fun. I love the 10 round rotary magazines.

I know many who had 597's and are a hit or miss really, out of the box. I had to send mine (at my expense, Rem would only pay the return shipping) to Quebec to get it fixed (jamming), after buying 8 factory magazines, all new ones.

I won 2nd place in an annual shooting competition with a dirty 10/22 that belonged to the guy running it (Left my beloved cooey 75 home and accidentally took dad's win94 instead, rifle cases look alike). Not to mention aftermarket accessories including 50 round drums for the 10/22.
