Hey GGNz,

I'm very pleased today as I have finally been approved for my R/PAL!! Heres my question although it may be stupid, I have to ask so here it goes;

I am currently a BC resident visiting family in my old stomping grounds Calgary. I decided to call the BC CFO to see my application status and was approved over the phone and got license number. I figure it's a great time to make my first purchase down here in Calgary 5% tax vs 12% tax ( a no-brainer ).

So I'm off to the local whole sale sports getting help with someone behind the counter and was immediately up front with the sales man, told him I only have my R/PAL number and several government ID ( DL MIL ID etc ). He said no cant do it. I was a little surprised as my understanding was they call in the CFO to verify the R/PAL number anyways. Then I was wondering how Internet purchases work then, just a ID number no scanned copy? Anyways, I thought this was odd and I wanted some guidance on this one. Am I right outta her??

Wholesale Sports = Nosale sports. They are a chain that employs variably educated sales people. But actually, I've always been asked for my PAL at every brick and mortar shop I've walked into and they've always compared the handsome photo on the card to my ugly face.

That said, I don't recall any internet shop sponsored on this board I've dealt with who has asked for a scan of the card. All they want is the number and your details.

After my (R)PAL was approved, and before the licence arrived in the mail, I was itching to purchases a SKS via "mailorder". I phoned the CFO to see if I could get my #, and use it to make a buy..... They said "no way!"....

What do they do with that information? Call applicable CFOffice to verify the number is valid? I'm assuming yes or there is no point to having one..you'd think a license number and several pieces of ID the very same government issued you would be sufficient. Goes like this ..
'oh no pal? No problem what's your pal number?'
Gives number shows ID
Store clerk calls CFOffice
'hey Im joe from joes sports I have bloggins here, this is his number is it valid?'
'oh yes it is, great thanks' (hang up)
Pays bill, leaves happy.

:f:p if only..

I know for private sales of NON restricted guns, all I needed was my PAL # and DOB and bought my first rifle before my card even arrived in the mail. I just had to call and ask for the number and they had no problem with it. :) As these guys have said I'm certain that actual businesses need card in hand though.

Why swim against the current? Study the rules and not what you think they are.

Hm, it's late and perhaps patience is worn out for the day. No, you can't purchase a firearm without having your card. While the number might be valid, there's no picture to make sure you are you. Just have to be patient for another week or so.

I find it odd that people have had to submit faxed copies of their license to retailers for online purchases. Admittedly I've only purchased ammo online but it was a simple form. Not owning a fax or a scanner I'd probably have to take a picture of my card if someone wanted to see it.

:agree: I've always had to fax in my PAL to the vendors i deal with when purchasing online.

I disagree. I have NEVER had to fax or email a scanned image of my PAL with online purchases. I've just provided the PAL and personal information. This is for both restricted and non-restricted. In store purchases I've shown my PAL every time.

Even online purchases require that a scan/photocopy of your RPAL be sent to the retailer.

Negative. If you provide name, pal, dob, an place of birth, the vendor can verify you with the CFC, PAL unseen.

Multiple site sponsors operate like this (save marstar)

It's just interesting thats all the whole process. It's all good though have card and made several purchases already. I seem to have a draw to expensive hobbies!
