First gun recommendations

I'd personally recommend getting a cheaper gun...say an ugly but decently scoped bugger for less than 400$...and then invest the difference in range time. 100$ Enfield can produce meat just as well as a super fantabular magnum under the conditions that beginner hunters first shots will be taken...and if your first shot is one that (say) a 30.06 can't take, without plenty of range time invested first, then you probably shouldn't take it.

my first center fire was a Ruger 77 in .223 but thats not what most people call a big game rifle but for just shooting it's probably the best chose for a gun that does a lot of shooting especially @ $5.99 per box (luck my gun shoots these pretty well). my dad just gave me his old Remington 700 (i think it's an ADL) in 30-06. but just talking about the rifle its self i'd have a hard time picking the better one, but the Remington does have a better trigger than the Ruger. as for scopes, a Leupold vxII 3-9x40mm sits atop my ruger and i'm pleased with it, something similar will probably go on the 700 once i give back the scope i borrowed

.270Win is a wonderful "all-around cartridge".
I, myself will go with either Remington 700 with detach magazine or Tikka T3.
Remington is known as well as Tikka to shoot very accurate and detachable magazine for me is an advantage when hunting from truck or ATV.

Good Luck

The Ruger Hawkeye in .30-06, .270. 7mm rem mag. or .300 Win. mag. Great trigger and superior engineering for the money. My preference .30-06. More "oomf" for moose than .270, cheaper ammo and lighter gun than the mags.
