First Gun Recommendations

Hey guys, Rileyrb26 here from BC. New to the sport, very excited to learn.

I was wondering for a first time owner what you would all recommend for a first handgun and first rifle. My budget is around $500-1200 for each.

I obviously have a few "i want to own this" guns picked out, but I want to start with something reliable, practical and somewhat cost effective to shoot.

Personal recommendation is start with a .22 for both ! I'm a huge fan of the Ruger 10/22 , start with the rifle (my first is from 1965 and still going strong) , not the take down ,although it's good also . Ruger or Browning target good to start for hand gunning . Your going to get as many suggestions as there members who answer . Goog luck with your guest . Just my 2 cents !

I agree with the post suggesting a .22 for both, for all sorts of reasons: cheaper, less "scary" for your friends or family you will inevitably shoot with, ammo is available, and you don't need a long range to have fun. So with that in mind:

Both of these are hugely popular and have tons of aftermarket support.

My 1st rifle was a 30-06 and handgun was a Sig M17.

As Blackcats said, start with 22’s

For semi auto rifle, either 10/22 or wildcat.
For Bolt action, either Tikka T1x or CZ 457

Hand gun My wife Ruger Mark IV 22/45 lite is really nice. I have a Glock G44 and have had zero issues with either one.

Savage A22 or A22 precision (Canadian Made)
Savage MkII (Canadian Made)
Ruger 10/22
Winchester Wildcat
GSG-16 or GSG-15

For handguns, I would avoid the temptation to buy an expensive gun first. I think it is better to buy a lower cost gun and see what you like/dislike to better inform your decision when it comes time for a better gun.
