First Gun SkS vs Mini14

I am looking for my first unrestricted rifle, im a fanboy of tacticool looking black rifles (so what who doesn't want cool rifles). But i dislike the the limiting laws of restricted rifles such as my favourite the AR15.

I am looking for somthing that can be modded with a pistol grip,ar-type stock and rails so i can mount a red dot and a foregrip.

Both the Sks and the mini14 have these available in canada, also i am unsure if their are sks's that come with the removable magazine already or is that an aftermarket thing only?

I know a pro for the sks is it shoots a cheaper round which is a pro for me, i'm looking for a nice compromise of cheapness, decent accuracy / reliability that can be modded with one of those conversations to make it all tactical like.

I would love to see what you guys recemend, i have been researching heavily into both as these types of rifles as they where never my cup of tea, but i want to own a rifle i can actually use and not have to be subject to ultra-draconian laws for guns in the same or less deadly calibers.

Their is no pistol type mags that have the pistol available in canada for either of these guns unfortunately so looks like im screwed their, it would be nice to use 10 round lar15 mags.

I would choose somthing like an ACR, XCR , Scar Or Tavor but their so expensive and the ACR is also impossible to find i hear.:stirthepot2:

edit: I'll take any other firearm recommendation aswell but these 2 are the ones i have been drawn towards.

Also i forgot to mention i'm no noob to shooting guns, ive shot many calibers from 308 to .22lr since i was 10 years old, so i don't need to start with somthing small

what about pistol caliber carbines?

Beretta CX-4
JRC
Sub-2000
etc.

10 round fun, cheap-ish ammo, NR, and if you get a pistol that accepts the same mag... Bonus.
 
I was looking into that aswell, It just seems if i'm going to go for a rifle - length gun i might as well use a rifle caliber. My main reason for not choosing one of those was because Correct me if i'm wrong, but they just dont have the range and accuracy for long - range plinking. Also 7.62x39 round is pretty darn cheep isnt it? As in cheaper then some pistol rounds, if i buy some soviet leftovers? Keep in mind im a noob to prices in canada most of the stuff ive been reading about and seeing on youtube is pertaining to u.s prices and such. (I also live 5 min away from Detroit and have family their with way sweater rigs)

Also i forgot to mention i'm no noob to shooting guns, ive shot many calibers from 308 to .22lr since i was 10 years old, so i don't need to start with somthing small

Well I hate to be 'that guy' but there are a variety of cool .22 rifles out there that will be very cheap and come tacticool ready, so any extra dough you want to drop into them will be upgrades. But other then that you really can't go wrong with an SKS, I love my Russian.
 
as for the pistol caliber carbines... 100m is easy, 200 gets a bit tougher with iron sights... So long range plinking... is difficult.

7.62X39 is very cheap with surplus ammo, but it really depends on what you want to do.

A good place to start is

.308 bolt action for longer ranges.
.223 or 7.62 for semi auto fun :)
9mm or .45 pistol for fun
.357 revolver to round out collection
Rimfire for cheap shooting fun times.

That is a good starter pack.

Remember the best starter/guns everyone should own (by no means a definitive list):
SKS
10/22
CZ-75
Cooey 75 / Cooey 39 / Cooey Ranger/ etc.
Remington 870 / Mossberg 500
 
I have both in ATI stocks and IMHO, they are equally fun to shoot. The SKS is much cheaper to purchase and feed so the choice may come down to funding... I suggest you get both!
 
Have both ,like them both.If cost is an issue the SKS is hard to beat. Even if you do put at tactical stock on it is still half the price of a mini 14 or 30.
 
.223 is easy to shoot and find, and its not that much more expensive than x39. If you use non corrosive modern x39, the .223 is cheaper.

the mini is way more expensive than the SKS tho, that's for sure.

I would prefer the mini however, having shot both.
 
Shot both. Own a Mini-14 and a CZ 858. Both are great guns in great calibers but I've got Tavor fever something fierce and they may just go on the sale block along with a Thureon Defense in 9mm sometime soon. I want that Tavor baaaaaaaaaaaddddd.

Trust me i want a tavor, or want to wait for the mini tavor(mtar) to come, as i'm jewish and isreal has cool guns but their pricey, does the CZ-858 have better accuracy? Minute of barn means it has the neccesary accuracy to hit a barn ? Lol. I dislike the CZ-858 wood furniture though and would want to change it and not sure if i can put a foregrip on it and it would be expensive to put rails on the top i think, ive seen some in the same price range as the mini-14's so.

858 has pretty good accuracy with stock sights . You can get tons of mods for it too . The main difference to me is the calibre . Do you like 223 or 7.62 ? Yes the beaver barf pseudo wood is nasty , but it's tough as hell . First thing I changed on mine was the pistol grip as that crap gets slippery in the summer and a fab grip wasn't too expensive . You might not find one that's new ( likely ) and lots of the used 858s have already had the original furniture changed out to something better .
 
Both are pinned to 5 rounds, if you're willing to afford a Mini 14, might as well spend a bit more to get something that legally accepts a 15 round STANAG Beowulf mag like the Type 97, SU-16, XCR, Benelli, or Tavor.
 
I should add that everyone should own an SKS . You'll never find a better gun for the price they are and , well , they are one of the original tacticool guns ( back when tacticool meant a gun could be counted on to save ones life on the battlefield , NOT a gun with a bunch of stupid black plastic bolted to it , lol ) .
 
Sweater Rigs = Firearms so dangerous when you go to fire them you start to sweat?
