Hey guys and gals,

I know this has probably been asked 1000 times and yes I have read the stickied threads on the 1911's but I want to hear from as many people as possible. I'm looking into getting into the handgun market (yes I do have my RPAL :p) and have always been drawn to the 1911's, like countless other people. Was wondering what my best options are? Budget would be around $1000 but if it means getting a better piece of steel for an extra $2-500 I'd be willing to fork out the extra bit of cash.

Personally, I would buy a newish Colt 1911 or a Smith and Wesson E series for the $1200 dollar price range.

What you really are asking for is to find as many reviews as possible on the different 1911 brands.
You should just google it and start reading. Honestly, there's tons of info from tons of people out there already.

Thats what I would do. And did when I bought my first gun, actually.
 
I bought a norc. Strip it 10 to 100 times. Beat it up. Scratch it up. Become comfortable with handling without the worry of ruining a nice gun.

Yep. That is why I love the Norc. I never worry about it like I would for a higher end piece of hardware.

Yup. Had one: shot it until it needed a new barrel from all the ammo through it and then sold it for almost what I paid for it. My suggestion: buy a Norinco 9mm 1911 and if you love it to near death, don't "put the AED on it" (change the worn parts or get sick of it or want the new gun), just sell it and then buy a Kimber/Colt/Sig/STI/whatever 1911. Feed it with cheap surplus ammo: only buy dies and start to reload if you realize you want to get the purdy 1911 in 9mm also. I say that because 9mm is cheaper than 45ACP, and the gun weighs the same so with the 9mm ammo it will be a "softer" gun to learn on: then when the skillz are LEET go on to UBER gear in you choice of caliber.
 
I bought a STI Trojan to shoot, and later on bought some Norinco's to tinker with. They are a great way to learn about the 1911 platform without worrying about messing up your main shooting handgun.
