First Handgun. 9mm?

My first handgun purchase was a S&W model 19 in .357 with a 6 inch barrel. I would have started out with a .22, or a 9mm, but I got it for $300 from an old friend of dad's, since he didn't use it anymore.

However, I did eventually get both a .22 and a 9mm in due time.:D

My 2 pennies and advice.

My first handgun is the Ruger SR9 9mm. It's a good piece, accurate, easy to strip, clean, and shoot. It was also priced right. The downside is the cost of the ammo. Even 9mm is hard to find at what I consider reasonable prices.

My second handgun, (of 2) is the Browning Buckmark Camper .22. Great little piece, with the grip angle and controls VERY similar to my SR9. Guess which one gets used the most?? I can buy bricks -500 rnds- of American Eagle .22 ammo for 20 bucks. I'm lucky to find 50 rnds of 9 mm for that price.

So my recommendation is - go with a good .22 calibre pistol. It's cheap to shoot, and the only way you get good with pistols is to practice, practice, practice. Shooting a .22 will give you lots of ammo for not a lot of money.

I've been to a couple local shops and from what I've gathered so far (as well as reading posts on CGN) .22 is cheapest ammo cost wise and 9mm up from that. I'm more inclined to go with the 9mm.
Any feedback on comparison G17,XD M&P? Thanks.

Ok... if you've been following the forum lately you may have notice a few post on how hard it is to buy 9mm ammo.

So... do you still want your first handgun to be 9mm and have it sitting in your safe because there is no 9mm available?

.22cal is the way to go for your first handgun and like mentioned before you could go for a Sig or Glock or a 1911 and get a 22 conversion kit for it.

Thanks again to everyone for the input and advice.

What is the deal with the low quantities of 9mm ammo these days?

More to think about once again....

Where do all of you guys live, that cant find 9mm ammo. I can easily walk into my gunstore and pick up as much ammo as i like. My first handgun purchase was a 9mm, ammo is cheap, easy to clean and good handgun to learn on how to shoot....wife loves to shoot it now. So it "become" hers and made me go buy another handgun, this time a bought a para 45acp.

+1 for 9mm handgun..

i dunno man whever im at a gun show or talk to any comp shooters or reloaders there is always deals for 500 9mm cartidges for 110 or 120 bucks... just stock up when u see the deals.

That's just it.... when someone see/hear a shipment come in they scoop up a couple of 1000rds (guilty) then tells a friend who scoops it up and so on. A store who gets a 8000 rds shipment is enough for 4 - 5 customers .

Yes, there is 9mm ammo out there on the shelf at some stores but at $25 a box... DUH! Guess that's why people who can buy by the 1000's, you save a few bucks.

Toronto, Ontario... my experience... Gagnon, LeBaron, SFRC.... NO 9mm IN STOCK.... Arrrrrrrrrrrrrg!
Target Sports some on the shelf but at $25-$30 per box of 50 depending on the brand and they did not have cases by the 1000.

And no I don't want to order on-line if I can help it. Need ammo today... want to buy ammo today, is my way of thinking. Not preplan 2 - 4 months in advance for a shippment to arrive at a store.

Sales person at Gagnon says the cause for this especially the reload stuff like primers is starting down in the US.

Go with a good quality .22 handgun with adjustable sights in stainless steel. You will never wear it out, sighting in is easy and stainless steel is very forgiving of inconsistant maintenence. .22 LR Federal bulk pack (525 rds) is $21.99 at the local Canadian Tire store.

I thought about 22 conversion kits but the kits often cost far more than a good 22 pistol... so I bought a Glock 17 in 9mm and an HK USP Tactical in .40SW

Next purchase will be a Sig :) Then something in the 1911 category.

I would definatly recomend any CZ 75 model in 9mm (or any cal for that matter)... really great reliable pistols and cheap!

X2 on the CZ75. Great pistol.

Also, the Browning Hi Power. A friend of mine has a FEG Hi Power he got from TSE a few years back. It works flawlessly, and was very cheap....(back then)

9mm ammo? What kind of 9mm ammo? Many different chamberings for 9mm :)

Someone please tell me if i have this wrong but I was told by my restricted firearms course teacher that three of the 9mm ammo is the same... The 9X19, 9mm Para, and 9 mm Luger. He said they were all interchangable... and then I know of one or two other 9mm ammo's but cant recall their name.

But I am also guilty of buying thousands of rounds ahead of time due to great deals, not preplanning... It makes sense if you are buying at half price to get a $hitload... right?

^^^You are correct.

There are 2 other 9mm loadings that I know of, a 9mm Glisenti (Italian WWI pistol) and 9 mm Largo (Spanish, I believe). There may be more out there.

My first gun was a 9mm glock.

I bought a .22 after my first trip to the range.

Love the glock but if I were to spend an hour shooting it everytime I go to the club I'd be poor in no time.

If you can only own one then get a .22 If you can own two then get a .22 and something that makes a big bang.
