For me it all depends on your likes. If you're in Alberta or BC, you can go to ranges, put down some entry fee and they'll let you use theirs.
I'd start with some .22s then move on to G17, CZ75 and then to heaviers with .45ACP or rather 50 Cal S&W 500 or D-EAGLE. Try on some different calibers to see which one you enjoy shooting the most.
Again, it depends on your taste and what you like in your hands. .22s are more precision pistols, larger the caliber, more the recoil.
For me, 22 is like a fart gun, so I prefer 9mm , 50CAL good for a few shots, but don't need sore arms.
Just based on my stupid experience, dont take em for a fact.
