First Handgun - Like a "Honda"

Hey, OP... I have you looked into the Sig P226 Classic? It's in 22lr for ~$700. Add another $500 bucks, you can buy 9mm X-changer kit right away. If buying a regular P226 and add standard 22lr kit, it will cost you boat loads more. Don't ask me why, I have no idea but I sure wish I did that in the first place. I bought regular P226R. As far as my research goes, I can't say there is absolutely zero difference, but quality and build are exactly the same. It maybe only different so that people can't swap out regular 22lr kits with X-changer kits and that too is debatable.

Go to our sponsor and you can do the math yourself: https://shopquestar.com/shopping65/shopdisplayproducts.asp?id=278&cat=Classic+22's

If you have deep pockets, you can blast factory 9mm all day long (I think it has decent kick... saying it doesn't is funny... look at the pic of yourself with gun pointed up at least 33 degrees. hehe), screw the 22lr conversion. But it's somewhat fun to have 22lr handy. I reload my own cast 9mm ammo and it costs as much as shooting 22lr but I still have a 22lr for kicks but I get bored fast. I only use it when I run out of 9mm at the range. It's good learning factor too. Using same gun practicing trigger pull and grip with 22lr saves lots of $$$.

So, instead of having 1 Sig, I ended up buying a P220 Classic from Questar and one day I will buy the 45ACP conversion kit for it and reload it too.

If you want some kick, go S&W 44 mag (or Ruger). :) I'm going to buy a S&W 629 soon and reload it with H110 powder. Hopefully, I can produce 1 meter flames.

I thought shotgun was fun until I blasted a whole box without a break. I like the BOOM, but the heavy loads I'm using is just.. damn... My 180+lbs noob friend with bad stance took a step back after each shot.

BTW, Sig is an excellent choice. I shot over 1k rounds with my cousin's Glock 19 and Sig P226 in the US. Never shot guns before... Got my licence 1 year later b/c I didn't know we can own handguns. LOL! Both are great guns. I almost settled for the Glock 17 here b/c it's cheap compared to Sig P226. Changed my mind. The ammo (if you don't reload) will cost many many more times of the initial cost of the gun. 1/2 grand more on a gun that you know will extensively use won't change a thing in the long run. Also, don't plan on saving any $$$ reloading either. You'll just shoot more. Only time you'll save $$$ is when you cast your own bullets. :)

Umm I hope those test results were sent to the CFO for pre approval before you sent them to Miramichi. Or you might be in for a longer wait than you expected.

thanks for the heads up - yeah after talking to a lot of people and trying out some more guns, I am going to shoot 9mm exclusively for my first pistol.

Sig p226R - now I am trying to decide if I want the contrast sights or optional night sights. By the time I am done I would like to own a 9mm, .45ACP, .44 revolver, tactical shotgun (super shorty is really cool, but most likely a stripped Rem 870), and a .22 rifle for fun once and awhile

No .22 pistols for me, I'll just dump the money into 9mm ammo for now and trade firearms at the range if I want to shoot .40/.45 for a bit.

No, the results were sent but I don't know if they were received. In the shorten your PAL application thread it says you can send your PAL application before receiving your RCMP stamped test results to speed up the process, I will simply fax/express mail my results once they arrive since I have a 28 day waiting period anyway

My cousin's P226 has night sights. They were cool when shot in the dark which I have in the desert. Found out a year later, night shooting not allowed. In reality... Makes no difference to me or even for him as his glock 17 and another Sig P226 is contrast. Besides the cool factor and being able to aim in the dark for self defense but tactical light or laser would fix that. Besides being cool looking, useless if you ask me plus it fades after a few years. The contrast on my P226R has white circle dot in front and square at the back. Good enough. However, if it was same price, I would go night sights for the cool factor. It'll fade but no worries... Still good during day.

Just be aware. P226 Classic + 9mm kit is $1200 and change.

Sounds like you're going similar route as me. Forget the 22lr rifle. Well, it totally depends on the shooter... My cousin's 22lr just collects dust and I only shot it about ~50rds out of it even when I was a complete noob. Get a Russian SKS and Norc M4 instead. :)

See it just goes to show that everyone is different with their own needs and wants. I have both a Russian SKS and Norinco M14S but I shoot a lot more rounds through my Ruger 10/22. The 308 is prohibitively expensive to shoot a lot of rounds for me and I hate cleaning the corrosive crap out of the SKS so it usually gets a lot of rounds through it at a time but not that often. The 22 is fun, cheap to run and a lot less annoying for the neighbours. The only problem is that my wife has pretty much taken it over... Maybe there is a good case for more recoil...

Update:

May 29/10: Passed PAL/RPAL challenge tests (written & practical)
May 31/10: Sent PAL/RPAL application
June 03/10: PAL/RPAL application received in Miramichi (according to my Canada Post tracking #)
June 08/10: My application has been received & is currently being processed (it says it was received 2010/06/02)

Is this the standard message while being processed?

Your application has been received. It is currently being processed. You have been, or will be contacted either by phone or by mail for additional information. Please check the status again at a later date.

I'm mostly worried about the "you have been, or will be contacted either by phone or by mail for additional information" because I sent it in without my RCMP stamped results (I wrote on my app I will fax/express mail them when I get it in the mail).

BTW...what would you guys/girls do in my situation (starting out):

A) Buy a Sig P226 Stainless Elite and join a cheaper range, use my LTATT to travel to different ranges for my first year of shooting as a guest, as well as to the range I joined (it's pretty far by my standards to shoot every weekend) / join the range closer to home next year when the initial costs are forgotten about

or

B) Buy a base Sig P226 (initial cost is lower) and join a more expensive club that is close to home?

Debating which one is more beneficial - some of the higher model Sigs have siglight sights/etc, something I might come to appreciate after learning to shoot better?

I sort of like the first idea better, a range membership is a consumable and it would feel better spending the money on something I get to keep...but I just don't know
